Jatznick brings industrial history to life: the forest seed-drying facility combines historic technology with continued production, while the Stork Tower recalls a former cement kiln. At the same time, the municipality lies at the foot of the Brohmer Berge. These different highlights can help you plan your trip—whether you want to focus on industrial monuments, long-distance cycle routes or other themes in the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald.

Forestry technology still in use

The forest seed-drying facility has been located in Jatznick since 1923. Original drying boxes from the time of its construction have been preserved in the storage building. Its equipment also includes a drying oven, rack and drum dryers, a dust-removal system, a cone seed de-winger, mine carts and the associated rail system. These technical facilities are still used for production, bringing industrial history and present-day use together.

Visitors can explore the building without a guided tour. Visitor access includes a lift; a ramp provides barrier-free access to the floor of the cone storage building.

Further traces of industrial history

The Stork Tower is another of Jatznick’s notable places. A former cement kiln, it is a landmark of the municipality. Alongside the facility dedicated to forest seed production, it represents a different technical process: cement firing. Those interested in industrial history will find two distinct points of interest in the municipality.

In Klein Luckow, which belongs to Jatznick, the Max Schmeling Memorial at the boxer’s birthplace commemorates Max Schmeling. He was born there on September 28, 1905. Many long-distance cycle routes pass the memorial. If you are planning a cycling tour, check the current route: alignments may change.

Landscape and places to relax in Jatznick

Jatznick lies at the foot of the Brohmer Berge. The Waldfestplatz is another landmark, and one of the municipality’s notable places for recreation and sightseeing. In Jatznick, therefore, industrial heritage sites and named places for recreation come together, without limiting the area to a single visitor interest.

Vorpommern-Greifswald: more ideas for planning your trip

The wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald offers further nature and outdoor activities. The district’s three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of its area. The Ueckermünder Heide is ideal for hiking, cycling and horse riding. When choosing a route, it is worth considering the different geographical scales: many long-distance cycle routes pass the memorial in Klein Luckow, while the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of EuroVelo Route EV10, enters the district. The Stettiner Haff circular route and the Route of North German Romanticism are also regional cycling routes for exploring Vorpommern-Greifswald. For specific trip planning, it is worth checking current routes and signage.

Culture and history offer other perspectives on the region than Jatznick’s industrial sites. In Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. In Anklam, the Otto Lilienthal Museum explores the life of aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal in his hometown. In Peenemünde, visitors can explore the Juliett U-461, a submarine now housed as a museum in the harbour; access conditions may change.

For a culinary perspective, a guided tour through Greifswald’s historic old town visits four local restaurants offering sweet and savoury treats. The wider region thus brings together different interests: technology and industrial history, nature and cycling routes, as well as museum experiences and cuisine.
