Discover Bocholt: Textile History, City History and Active Pursuits
Accommodation in Bocholt
Bocholt combines a history of textile manufacturing with distinctive city landmarks and opportunities to get active outdoors. The weaving mill and spinning mill of the LWL Museum, St. George’s Church and a bronze city model showing the year 1822 offer different ways to explore the city’s history. The urban forest and the Aasee leisure area are centred on signposted routes and other opportunities for physical activity. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether textile history, historic buildings or active time outdoors will shape your stay.
Textile History in Bocholt
The LWL Textile Museum Bocholt comprises a weaving mill and a spinning mill. A bridge over the Aa connects the two areas, making the museum’s two-part layout immediately clear. In this way, two places connected with textile history are linked while retaining their individual names.
A digital cycling tour exploring Bocholt’s textile history starts and ends at the museum. Cyclists choose when to set off and how long to spend on the tour. This offers different ways to explore the same subject: the weaving mill and spinning mill at the Textile Museum, and a cycling tour whose timing you decide for yourself.
Church, City Model and Industrial Heritage
St. George’s Church is Bocholt’s first parish church and is considered one of Westphalia’s oldest and most important church buildings. A bronze city model has stood in St. George’s Square, between the church and the Historic Town Hall, since the city’s 800th anniversary in 2022. It shows Bocholt around 1822, including its outline and distinctive buildings. The view of the city as it was then complements the study of individual buildings with a depiction of the city as a whole.
The New Town Hall, built in the 1970s, stands at Berliner Platz and houses a cultural centre and a theatre. This adds a building from a considerably later period to the city’s historical points of interest. Another facet of its industrial heritage is the historic “Fuckepott” steam engine near the Shopping Arkaden. It is one of the few in Germany whose horizontal core component is still preserved.
Outdoor Activities
The Aasee leisure area includes a mountain bike and skating course, a bouldering wall and a small sports field for handball, basketball and football. There is also mini golf, a boules court, a high-rope climbing course and an adventure playground. The different facilities cater to a range of activities, from courses and climbing to ball games, mini golf and boules.
The urban forest has three signposted routes measuring approximately 2.6, 3.9 and 10 kilometres. The different distances offer a choice based on how far you want to go; the 2.6-kilometre route is popular with joggers. Exercise equipment is also available along the route.
Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay
Bocholt can be reached by bus from MĂĽnster and the Netherlands; there are bus and train connections from Wesel. Check the timetables before travelling so your journey fits in with your planned visits.
The spinning mill is about 200 metres from the railway station, and the weaving mill at the Textile Museum is about 900 metres away. If the museum is a main focus of your stay, you can take these different distances into account when choosing where to stay. The distances to both parts of the museum help you gauge the station’s location in relation to your destinations.
