Linnich combines a history dating back to 888 with cultural attractions including churches, historic sites and the German Glass Painting Museum. The Rur also shapes the town and offers opportunities for activities in a natural setting. You can focus your stay on local history and culture, or explore the various paths and activities along the river.

History along the Promenades and in the Town Centre

The Promenade Circular Route leads past 32 sites tracing Linnich’s history. It comprises four promenades and evokes the 19th century, when the fortifications were still standing. Historic sites include the Jewish cemetery and a memorial stone for the former synagogue. The cemetery is freely accessible; 29 gravestones remain. Check local access information before your visit.

The churches also add distinct historical highlights to the walk. St. Martinus is a late Gothic brick church and a 15th-century hall church; its foundation stone was laid in 1453. It continues to define the town centre. The visitor route also includes the Evangelical Church, with its choir stalls and Baroque organ. The Hubertus Cross on the road from Linnich to Lindern commemorates the Battle of St. Hubertus in 1444.

Glass Painting and Cultural Events

The German Glass Painting Museum offers around 1,400 square metres of exhibition space across seven levels. The museum’s size is a highlight in its own right, alongside the historic sites in the town centre. The Linnich Cultural Summer is a recurring cultural event held annually between May and October. The individual events vary from year to year; check the dates for your travel period if you would like to plan your visit around one.

Compare Routes along the Rur

The Rur is considered a defining feature of Linnich and offers opportunities to relax in a natural setting. The walking routes described differ mainly in their approximate length and destination: a round trip to Rurdorf is around 4 kilometres, while Floßdorf is about 6 kilometres away. An approximately 10-kilometre circular route passes through the Rur floodplains to Tetz. The approximately 11-kilometre circular tour follows the Rur to Barmen and passes a water castle dating from the 14th century. Use the distances as a guide and check trail conditions before setting out.

For longer cycling trips, the tourism working group plans and organises cycle tours in and around Linnich. It organises town walks together with the Linnich Historical Society. Guided tours in Linnich can be booked; the historical tour along the Promenade Circular Route lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours. Confirm booking arrangements before your trip. Canoeing and pedal boating are also considered possible activities on the Rur. Whether local providers offer them depends on their services and river conditions.

Travelling by Train and Bicycle

The Rurtalbahn connects Linnich with Düren on its northern section and also serves Jülich. Bicycles can be taken on board all day, subject to vehicle capacity; each vehicle has five bicycle spaces. Since timetables and conditions for taking bicycles can change, check both before travelling.

More Cultural Destinations in the Wider Düren Destination

In the wider Düren destination, the RurUfer Cycle Route offers another option for regional cycling plans, with stages that can be selected. The 180-kilometre route runs from Signal de Botrange in Belgium to Roermond in the Netherlands. A cultural highlight in the wider Düren destination is the almost completely preserved and restored Jülich Citadel, with its ducal palace in the style of the Italian High Renaissance. It can be explored independently or as part of a guided tour. Check current opening arrangements before your visit.
