Discover Lommersdorf: Church, Mining, Remembrance
Accommodation in Lommersdorf
Lommersdorf’s history spans Romanesque architecture, wartime remembrance and its former iron mining industry. Several distinct traces bring the town’s past to life: a church with surviving features from earlier building phases, stone memorials and the remains of a former V1 launch site. A local viewpoint also offers a distinctive feature.
Church and historic traces in Lommersdorf
The church in Lommersdorf is a Gothic building dating from the 16th century, built as a reconstruction of an older Romanesque basilica dating to around 1100. Romanesque-era tower windows have survived, along with a baptismal font dating from between 1150 and 1180. The church thus brings together architectural features from several centuries: its 16th-century Gothic form and older Romanesque elements. If you are planning to visit the interior, check local access arrangements in advance.
Next to the church is a monument to those who fell in the First World War. Thirteen stone crosses commemorate the Second World War. Along Römerstraße, you can also find surviving foundations and bunker-like remains at a former V1 launch site. These sites represent different forms of commemoration and remembrance: from the monument and crosses to structural remains. Together with the church’s history, they form a notable historical focus for a stay in Lommersdorf.
The history of iron mining is also part of the story. There were two mines in the town; one remained in operation until 1928. This adds a chapter of more recent local history to the story of the church’s earlier building phases. A local viewpoint was built using hand-hewn stone from a quarry.
