Discover Euskirchen: Roman history, nature and tours
Accommodation in Euskirchen
In the Euskirchen district, ideas for days out range from a waterside circular trail to a route that teaches you about the solar system. There is also a visitor mine, Roman bathing history, and activities focused on nature and animals. When choosing accommodation, it is worth first deciding which experiences interest you most. The destinations mentioned are in different parts of the district, so base your search on the excursion locations that matter to your plans.
Circular trails, point-to-point hikes and cycling
Local public transport in the Euskirchen district makes it possible to take point-to-point hikes without having to return to your starting point. Buses and trains also make cycling trips easier, as bicycles can be taken along. This means you can plan a route as a point-to-point trip rather than a loop. Check timetables and bicycle carriage conditions before setting off.
A 13.5-kilometre circular trail around Lake Olef is suitable for both hiking and cycling. A shorter hiking option is the EifelSchleife Burg Satzvey in Mechernich: this easy 7.4-kilometre route starts and ends at the Katzenstein hiking car park and takes 1 hour and 36 minutes to walk. This gives you a choice of two circular trails of different lengths; only the EifelSchleife has a walking time specified here.
At the starting point of the EifelSchleife, the Katzensteine rise up to 15 metres as a Bunter sandstone rock formation. The rock type and height give this stretch its own distinctive landscape character.
Discover nature and deepen your knowledge along the way
Near Effelsberg in Bad Münstereifel, the Planet Trail has run for just under 800 metres since autumn 2004. Information panels introduce the planets in our solar system and the Sun. This short trail offers a different focus from a hike where the distance is the main attraction: here, exercise is combined with a subject that unfolds step by step.
The Eifel Nature Centre in Nettersheim offers guided excursions, seminars and varied programmes for children and school classes. Regular events include fossil hunting, introductions to beekeeping and programmes about Roman life. If you would rather explore nature topics on a guided excursion or in a seminar, you will find a different format here than on the Planet Trail. Check current event dates before your visit.
Roman history and experiences for a range of interests
The Zülpich Roman Baths showcase 2,000 years of bathing history above an exceptionally well-preserved Roman bathing complex. Children can enjoy interactive activity stations, sensory experiences involving smells, ancient games and varied treasure trails. Alongside the historic complex, there are several ways to explore Roman bathing culture through play.
The Besucherbergwerk Grube Wohlfahrt visitor mine in Hellenthal offers a different chapter underground. The Tiefen Stollen, with several side tunnels, has been opened up as a visitor mine over a total length of around 900 metres; guided tours start at the mine building. The approximate length refers to the section of tunnels made accessible, while visitors explore the complex on a guided tour.
In Hellenthal, the bird of prey station holds flight displays featuring birds of prey ranging from the Eurasian pygmy owl to the bald eagle. The Hellenthal Wildlife Park covers 64 hectares and is home to dozens of wild and domestic animal species; the animals and mix of species may change. If you would like to combine a visit with a flight display or an event at the nature centre, check the relevant dates and times in advance.
Choose accommodation based on the experiences you have planned
Then compare the location of potential accommodation with the places you plan to visit, and work out transport connections for your chosen destinations. That way, your search starts with the experiences that genuinely interest you rather than with a general list of accommodation features.
