Marmagen: Nature Trail, Roman History and Craftsmanship
Accommodation in Marmagen
Marmagen combines an immersive exploration of the Kalkeifel with Roman history and a centuries-old craft tradition. An accessible nature trail at the former Eifelhöhen-Klinik leads through different aspects of the landscape and the village. Its twelve stations include topics such as calcareous grassland, a historic garden, a pond and Roman history, as well as views towards Steinfeld Abbey.
Experience the nature trail with all your senses
The trail is step-free and offers circular routes with varying gradients. Guide edges make it easier to find your way; some locations have information boards in Braille and tactile models. This means visitors can enjoy the landscape, tactile information and different route options. The stations bring together natural and historical themes without limiting the visit to just one focus.
The café-restaurant and an accessible toilet are also available at the Eifelhöhen-Klinik site. Before your visit, check local access conditions, as the condition of the path or facilities may change. If you rely on specific facilities when planning your trip, you can use this information alongside a prior check of the current conditions.
Roman traces and craft tradition
The ancient settlement of MARCOMAGUS is recorded on the Tabula Peutingeriana. Archaeological investigations located it on the Roman road from Cologne to Trier, between Marmagen and Nettersheim. This gives the village’s Roman history a concrete connection to an ancient settlement and a road that ran through the region.
A centuries-old craft tradition is also part of the village’s character. Marmagen has a concentration of businesses related to the construction industry. Together with the Roman traces, this offers a glimpse of different sides of the village’s history: ancient settlement and skilled work that has been part of the village for many centuries.
Everyday life and the weekly market in Marmagen
The weekly market takes place on Tuesdays from 8 am to 1 pm in Marmagen’s village square, the Eiffelplatz. If you would like to plan your stay around a visit to the market, check the details locally in advance, as the market schedule and participating vendors may change. The village’s everyday amenities also include bakeries, butchers, restaurants, a petrol station, shops and other services. These give you several local places to visit as you explore Marmagen.
More excursions in the wider destination of Nettersheim
The wider destination of Nettersheim also offers its own archaeological and landscape attractions. At the Archaeological Landscape Park in Nettersheim, parts of a Roman settlement and the Roman road have been made visible in the landscape. The approximately 4.5-kilometre circular trail starts at the Eifel Nature Centre and leads to eight stations, where partial reconstructions bring the findings from excavations at the vicus of Nettersheim to life.
For a different kind of excursion, there is the Via Velo cycle route: the circular route is 22.5 kilometres long and is listed as taking approximately two to three hours; the Eifel Nature Centre, which has a tourist information office, can be used as a starting point. The 20-kilometre Eifel Herb Trail leads from the Eifelsteig in Nettersheim to Bad Münstereifel and introduces hikers to local herbs and plants through all the senses. From the Nature Centre, various discovery trails also lead to orchid meadows, Roman temples and fossil-rich areas, which can be reached on foot or by bicycle. Nettersheim can be reached by train on the Cologne–Trier Eifel line.
The variety of activities can help you decide on the kind of trip you want: the nature trail in Marmagen brings several themes together across twelve stations, while the wider destination of Nettersheim offers, among other things, an archaeological circular trail, a cycling route and a themed hiking trail.
