Borgholzhausen combines hiking routes with distinctive landmarks from the town’s history and its own culinary tradition. The Hermannsweg passes through the town, while Ravensberg Castle, the bleaching house and gingerbread-making each tell a different story about the town. Whether you mainly want to hike, discover cultural history or attend a summer event, the choice of experiences gives your stay its own focus.

Hiking between the Hermannsweg and Barenberg

The Hermannsweg passes through Borgholzhausen. The Luisenturm tower stands directly on the route, on Johannisegge hill at an elevation of 291 m. Local circular hiking trails include the Entdeckerweg, Panoramaweg, Luisenturmweg, Schloss-Brincke Weg and Burg Ravensberg Weg. Their names suggest different ways to explore the surrounding area on foot, although detailed route information is not available for every trail.

One option described in more detail is the 13.4 km Barenberg loop. It is a challenging route, signposted for Nordic walking, and starts and finishes at the Ravensberger Stadion car park. This specific distance is a useful guide when planning; route details may change, so check the latest information before setting out. Barenberg itself is also distinctive for its woodland: old red beeches grow east of the Ravensberg-Barenberg nature reserve. Their crowns let very little light reach the ground, so hardly any other plants grow there.

Ravensberg Castle and local history

Ravensberg Castle in Borgholzhausen is the ancestral seat of the Counts of Ravensberg. Visitors can climb the keep for the view, and guided castle tours are available for groups. For current tour arrangements, check the operator’s information. Climbing the keep and joining a group tour are two different options. Brincke moated castle is also located in the district of Barnhausen, and the Evangelical Church in Borgholzhausen is one of the oldest churches in the Ravensberg region.

Another trace of the town’s history leads to canvas-making: the bleaching house tells of its importance in Borgholzhausen. The cultural and local history museum houses exclusively original treasures from Borgholzhausen. The Kiepenkerl adds a different note to the townscape: it is a selfie spot where visitors can stop and take photos; hikers and cyclists pass it along their route. Together, these places offer different points of interest, whether you are drawn to historic buildings, local craft history or striking photo opportunities.

Gingerbread tradition, theatre and a park for all generations

Regional cuisine is also part of Borgholzhausen’s history. Since 1740, the town has been known beyond the region as a centre of honey confectionery and gingerbread production. This long culinary tradition adds another dimension to a cultural stroll, without implying any specific offering today.

Every summer, the PIUMER Bauerntheater e. V. stages a Low German play at the open-air and nature theatre. The Bönkerschen quarry’s open-air and nature theatre hosts, among other events, theatrical performances, including in Low German, and open-air concerts. As individual event dates vary, it is worth checking the relevant dates before planning a visit.

The Generations Park by the Violenbach invites visitors to play, exercise and relax, and offers outdoor fitness facilities. This adds a place for activity and a quieter break to the hiking and cultural history on offer. The Kiepenkerl, stage events and park each have a different focus; together with the hiking trails, they offer a range of options to suit the interests of your travel group.
