Discover Gütersloh: Parks, Culture and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Gütersloh
Gütersloh showcases its diversity through specific places: Mohns Park combines play and sports facilities with an open-air stage, while the Botanical Garden and City Museum offer different ways to explore nature and everyday history. There are also half-timbered buildings, technological history and routes along the water. You can focus your stay on a range of interests and activities.
Parks, Gardens and Open-Air Culture
Mohns Park offers a wide range of play, sports and leisure activities for all age groups. Its facilities include mini golf, sports and tennis courts, a playground and a water-treading pool. These facilities are still there, though some have changed; check the latest operating details for each facility before your visit.
The open-air stage in Mohns Park hosts cultural events outdoors. In summer, these include concerts and film screenings, for example, as part of the annual “Gütersloh Summer.” Gütersloh also hosts more than 30 free cultural events each year; the program may vary.
The Gütersloh Botanical Garden features eight themed gardens and is an inviting place to stroll, discover flowers and relax. The Apothekergarten Gütersloh Friends Association offers expert-led garden tours. Tours start at 11 a.m. in front of the entrance to the Palm House Café; advance booking is not required. Check the latest details before your visit.
City History and Technology
The Gütersloh City Museum uses numerous exhibits to show what everyday life in the city was like several decades ago. It is housed in the former warehouse of the Angenete & Wulfhorst grain merchants: the ground floor covers the textile and metal industries, while the upper floor focuses on the history of medicine. Tours are available on weekdays by prior appointment.
The historic Veerhoffhaus is a half-timbered building that defines the cityscape and features several distinct construction phases. Together with the Kirchplatzring ensemble, it is one of Gütersloh’s central historic monuments. The different construction phases give the building its own architectural character and set it apart from the exhibits at the City Museum.
The Miele Museum at Miele’s headquarters focuses on the history of technology. Across 750 square meters, it displays documents from the company’s history alongside around 200 items from its production range; exhibits may change. The Mühlenstroth Steam Railway offers a different perspective on technology: a 600-millimeter-gauge track was laid in a loop around a property in Gütersloh.
Waterways and Cycling
The Dalke Water Discovery Trail consists of 20 stations. They vividly demonstrate the ecological and economic importance of water and its many uses. You can explore the trail on foot or by bike. When planning your route, note that it is interrupted in Avenwedde: between Station 1 at the Große Wiese nature reserve and Station 3 at Strangmühle, you will need to leave the Dalke.
The D3 Cycle Route passes through Gütersloh and forms part of a European route more than 3,500 kilometers long. Cycling through the city, the surrounding district and the Teutoburg Forest lets you explore parks, historic sites and landscapes. Check the signage and local conditions before setting out. The Ems Cycle Route is also one of the attractive long-distance cycling routes in the Gütersloh district, within a network of cycle routes around 1,000 kilometers long.
Nature in the Gütersloh District
The Gütersloh district also features a variety of landscapes. The Boomberge, with their nutrient-poor sandy soils, are the district’s most significant inland dune area; the Holter Forest is one of its largest contiguous woodland areas. Together with the neighboring Schloßwiesen, the Erlenbruch nature reserve forms a recreational area for tourists and local residents. Newly marked hiking trails lead through the district’s Senne landscape or the Teutoburg Forest and offer scenic views.
Tailor your search for accommodation in Gütersloh to the places and activities you actually plan to visit.
