Discover Marienfeld – Monastery History and Trails
Accommodation in Marienfeld
Marienfeld combines a distinctive monastery complex with historic trails and excursions in the wider destination of Harsewinkel. The former Cistercian abbey is the cultural focal point; the Cistercian Trail also offers a short circular walk, while a longer regional hiking trail passes through Marienfeld. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: monastery history, outdoor activity or further experiences in Harsewinkel.
Monastery complex spanning several periods
The former Cistercian abbey comprises a late Romanesque abbey church, a Baroque abbey building and farm buildings dating from the 18th century. These buildings are arranged around the historic monastery courtyard. Their different architectural styles give the site several distinct features: alongside the church, the abbey building and the former farm buildings are also part of the complex. The architecture of the late Romanesque church influenced important church buildings in Westphalia and the Baltic region. The historic courtyard brings these building types together in one place, where ecclesiastical architecture and farm buildings sit side by side.
Experience history on foot
The 1,200-metre-long Cistercian Trail is a historic circular walk around the monastery grounds. The monastery’s history is explained on 13 information panels. You can visit the monastery as part of a guided tour; tour options may vary. If you would like to combine the walk with a visit, check the current tour dates in advance. The walk and the guided tour offer different perspectives: the trail explores the history along the route, while a guided tour takes you inside the monastery.
In the wider destination of Harsewinkel
The wider destination of Harsewinkel brings the area’s historical significance into focus: Founded in 1185, the Cistercian monastery of Marienfeld was one of Westphalia’s most important monasteries until its dissolution in 1803. The Prälatenweg is a circular hiking trail connecting the three former monasteries in Herzebrock, Clarholz and Marienfeld. Along the route, you can also visit monasteries and gardens in Marienfeld, Herzebrock and Clarholz. Another cultural and historical highlight is the Marienfeld local history museum, where traditional rural and crafts practices are brought to life.
The wider destination of Harsewinkel also offers nature experiences. The HĂĽhnermoor is its oldest nature reserve and a remnant of a 4,000-year-old raised bog landscape. A visit is particularly rewarding in June, during the cotton grass bloom. The 7.15-kilometre regional HĂĽhnermoor hiking trail passes through Marienfeld. Its length differs considerably from that of the 1,200-metre Cistercian Trail, so you can choose between a shorter historic monastery walk and a longer hiking route.
