Frenkhausen is a peaceful holiday destination in the hills of the Sauerland. The traffic-calmed surroundings and forests shape the character of the village and are ideal for a stay where walks set the pace of the day. If you are looking for accommodation for your trip, you can first consider whether peace and nature should be the main focus or whether other experiences will shape your holiday.

Cyclists also have a specific route to follow: a cycle route connects Frenkhausen with Meschede-Olpe, providing access to the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route and the Sauerland Cycle Ring. This makes it easy to combine a stay in Frenkhausen with a cycling holiday. Check local route conditions before setting off to make sure your plans suit the route in question.

Forests and seasonal excursions

The Henne, Sorpe and Möhnesee reservoirs are considered nearby recreational areas. Fort Fun and winter sports areas are further seasonal excursion options in the wider area around Frenkhausen. If you plan to visit these destinations, check the relevant dates and conditions in advance. This lets you combine a peaceful stay in the holiday destination with excursions, without spending every day of your holiday in the same way.

Water and paths in Meschede

Meschede has its own highlights at Lake Henne and along paths through the town and surrounding countryside. The Henne Boulevard connects the lake and the town over a distance of two kilometres. It passes Hennepark and the open Henne sculpture at Winziger Platz. The boulevard is barrier-free and features a fitness trail.

At Lake Henne, Berghausen bathing bay offers opportunities for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding at the watersports station, sailing and rowing. Another way to experience the lake is the Sinnepfad above Lake Henne: this family-friendly circular route combines ten interactive stations with views of the water. The Pirate Bay, a free outdoor adventure playground, is also a great option for families. It features a pirate ship, climbing and play equipment, and a barrier-free inclusive area. From the parking area at Berghausen bathing bay, a barrier-free access path leads to Pirate Bay in about five minutes; check the conditions for this access before your visit.

If you prefer to explore on foot, you can choose between different lakeside routes: the circular trail marked A8 goes around the Henne reservoir and offers views of the lake. Along the shore, the Wogenweg combines nature and culture; twelve steles display a changing selection of themed poems. The routes therefore offer different experiences: a circuit around the reservoir or a walk featuring literary stops.

Historic sites and choosing the focus of your holiday

In Eversberg, the old town trail combines local history with a circular route of about 2.5 kilometres. It passes the historic town hall and half-timbered houses; from the castle ruins, you can enjoy views over Eversberg. The route also includes an adventure playground shaped like a knight’s castle. In the historic centre, cobblestones, half-timbered houses and the market square with its old town hall give the place a different character from the open countryside around Frenkhausen.

Remblinghausen’s historic sawmill also offers its own cultural highlight. It invites visitors on a journey through 200 years of everyday life and working worlds; guided tours, a children’s programme and other activities round out the visit. These local and cultural attractions are quite different from walks in the forest or activities by the lake, and can help you find the holiday rhythm you are looking for.

Once you have decided on the focus you want, you can also consider the location of your activities when choosing accommodation.
