Oberberge offers two distinct ways to explore: the history of St. Luzia Chapel and the circular route around Berge (B7), which passes through wooded countryside to the Esmecke Reservoir. At Jüppken Park, Kneipp facilities meet the SauerlandRadring. This gives you concrete starting points for planning your trip around culture, hiking and cycling.

Chapel history in Oberberge

St. Luzia Chapel in Oberberge was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Bernard Fricke in 1647 and restored in 1995/96. It belongs to the parish of St. Luzia and is located on Wennestraße. The consecration and restoration mark two distinct chapters in its history: the consecration date in the 17th century and a later renovation. If you are interested in the history of religious architecture, the chapel offers a tangible historical point of reference for exploring Oberberge.

Jüppken Park and the SauerlandRadring

Jüppken Park is located right next to the SauerlandRadring and has Kneipp facilities. The park thus offers a different focus from the chapel: here, the named cycling route and Kneipp facilities take centre stage. When planning your stay, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus on cultural history, cycling or the Kneipp facilities. These options offer different points of emphasis, without requiring a set itinerary.

The circular route around Berge (B7)

The circular route around Berge (B7) starts in Oberberge, passes through wooded countryside along the Homert Nature Park to the Esmecke Reservoir, and then returns to Oberberge. The route description therefore includes a return to the starting point. The circular route is 10.6 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 3:03 hours. It also involves 253 metres of ascent and 253 metres of descent. Taken together, the distance, time and elevation gain provide a clearer idea of the tour’s scope than distance alone.

The reservoir is a stop along the way before the route leads back to Oberberge. This means you can plan the route as a complete hike, rather than treating the reservoir as the endpoint. Parking for the circular route is available at Jüppken Park. Check the latest route information before setting off if you plan to rely on this practical detail.

More trails in the wider destination of Meschede

The wider destination of Meschede offers other independent hiking options. The Meschede Höhenwanderweg is a circular route marked with an “M” that passes through the Meschede municipal area. It runs from Erflinghausen via Grevenstein and Freienohl to Eversberg and offers views across the region. The Hennesee circular route A8 offers a different kind of walk: it goes all the way around the reservoir and provides views of the lake.

Above the Hennesee, there is also a family-friendly nature trail with ten interactive stations and views of the lake. By comparison, the B7 focuses on a circular route that returns to Oberberge. The circular route around the Hennesee and the nature trail are independent destinations in the wider Meschede area, outside the description of Oberberge itself.

Choose your base according to the excursions you actually plan to take, and treat the regional destinations as a separate part of your planning.
