Discover Beverungen on the Weser: History and Nature
Accommodation in Beverungen
Beverungen combines its immediate setting on the Weser with a distinctive landscape: the town centre lies in a wide valley basin, surrounded by densely forested hills rising to 360 m above sea level. Here, the town’s history and natural surroundings go hand in hand.
Town History and Shared Experiences
Built in 1662, the Cordt-Holstein House is one of the town’s sights. The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist, built in 1698, is another. A residential tower at Beverungen Castle is considered a local landmark. The house, church and tower offer different points of historical interest, so you need not limit your visit to a single building.
Carnival is a recurring event in the annual calendar: Beverungen celebrates it every year together with Lauenförde, under the direction of the Weserbrücke Carnival Association. If you would like to plan your trip around the festivities, check the specific event date in advance.
Children can enjoy the “Children’s Rally” as part of the Beverungen town walk. Following the beaver’s tracks, it takes them on a short tour through Beverungen, with riddles and discoveries along the way. The rally combines a walk around town with activities that let children follow the clues themselves.
Hiking and Cycling Routes
Hikers can choose between two routes of different lengths: the “Where the Goat Becomes the Gardener” quality hiking trail in Beverungen is 13 km long, while the Weser-Bever Höhenweg is 33 km long. Their lengths help you gauge the scale of your planned hike; the quality hiking trail designation applies to the first route.
Beverungen is very easy to reach via the Weser Cycle Route, a popular long-distance cycling route in Germany. Many routes are part of the NRW cycling network and are signposted accordingly. As route conditions can change with the seasons, it is worth checking the latest conditions before setting out on a bike ride.
The Dalhausen Basketmakers’ Museum also offers a broader perspective on the municipality. Opened in 1994, it uses two floors to explore the history of basketmaking, the materials required and the products made. A visit thus offers an insight into the craft and its materials, from the raw materials to the finished products.
