Discover Marienmünster
Accommodation in Marienmünster
Marienmünster combines monastic heritage with trails that explore nature and cultural themes in different ways. The former Benedictine abbey, concerts and a visitor centre form the cultural focus; themed trails highlight traditional orchards and the role of beech and oak trees in monastic life. When planning your trip, you can decide whether music and architectural history, themed discoveries, or longer walking and cycling routes should take priority.
Abbey, music and monastic life
The former Benedictine abbey in Marienmünster preserves sacred art treasures, including Baroque structures dating from 1683 to 1685. Regular high-quality concerts take place in the abbey church and the monastery’s concert halls. If you would like to include music in your plans, you can check the concert dates before your trip.
The abbey also has a visitor centre, where you can learn about the monasteries of the region through multimedia exhibits. A map projected onto the floor enables interactive animations and information films. In the abbey garden, you can discover which plants monasteries used in their diets and which they used to ease ailments. Alongside architecture and music, the exhibits also explore gardening knowledge and aspects of monastic life.
In the woods near the abbey church, a statue of the Virgin Mary stands on a tall base built of rough-hewn stone. It was erected as a pilgrimage site for the veneration of the Virgin Mary, at the request of many visitors and pilgrimage groups.
Walking and themed trails
Marienmünster has 130 kilometres of marked walking trails and numerous cycling routes. The approximately one-kilometre-long Holz (Wood) themed trail by the abbey is designed to be accessible. At eleven stops, it explores the role of beech and oak trees in monastic life—a clearly defined theme on a comparatively short route.
For a longer walk, take the ecumenical “Weg der Stille” (Path of Silence) pilgrimage trail. It starts in medieval Schwalenberg, runs for about 41 kilometres through the landscapes of the town of Marienmünster, and continues to the banks of the Weser. The short themed trail and the pilgrimage route thus offer very different ways to spend time on foot.
Discoveries in Vörden
In Vörden, the GPS and traditional orchard educational trail is aimed primarily at young people and families with children. Seven stops feature information, short quiz questions and other activities about traditional orchards. The stops combine interesting facts with small tasks, making this trail particularly suited to discovering the subject together.
The indoor leisure pool in Vörden offers something different: a Roman steam bath, a whirlpool, a large sauna complex, a paddling pool, a swimming pool and a spacious sunbathing lawn. If you plan to visit the pool, check the latest operating information before your trip.
Cycling routes and choosing where to stay
The Europaradweg R1 runs through the town of Marienmünster, leading from the Netherlands through Germany and Poland towards the Baltic States and St Petersburg. The Wellness Route, which links health resorts in East Westphalia, also runs through the town. The Monastery Gardens Route starts at the former Benedictine abbey in Marienmünster and is well suited to a five-stage cycling trip.
Your day plans can therefore include a range of routes: a themed trail of about one kilometre, a pilgrimage trail of around 41 kilometres, and a cycling route that can be completed in five stages. Choose where to stay based on the experiences that interest you most.
