Dörentrup between nature, hiking trails and history
Accommodation in Dörentrup
Dörentrup can be explored in a variety of ways: nature observation, hiking and traces of village life in times gone by all shape what the area has to offer. The district of Schwelentrup was awarded official recognition as a recreational resort in 1978. The deciding factors were its exceptional scenic beauty, good air quality and suitability for promoting health and recreation.
Observe and discover nature
The Schwelentrup Wildlife Observation Station invites visitors to watch roe deer and other wildlife from a hide. The Schwelentrup Bee Discovery Trail offers a different perspective on nature, explaining the ecological importance of bees. In the bee house, you can see a mini bee colony in an observation hive and discover the daily life of two bee colonies. Tours with beekeepers are possible; if you plan to take one, check availability in advance.
Along the Schwelentrup Tree Discovery Trail, visitors can identify 44 numbered tree species between Schwelentrup and Sternberg Castle. Tours with a forester can be booked. The NABU Nature Trail offers another focus: seven information boards introduce the landscape, nature, flora and fauna. The trail offers views of Schwelentrup and passes the sika deer enclosure.
Longer trails also lead through the countryside. The Lipperland Trail follows the route past the former Walkenmühle through the Begaauen Nature Reserve towards Dörentrup-Wendlinghausen. Across the wider Lippe destination, the hiking trail network covers around 2,000 kilometres. It includes part of European long-distance path E1, as well as the award-winning Hermannshöhen and Hansaweg trails.
Choose hiking trails by length and character
The Archaeological Time Journey takes in twelve archaeological and historic monuments over 18 kilometres. It consists of a 12-kilometre eastern loop and a 6-kilometre western loop, giving you a choice of two routes of different lengths. The trail is intended for history enthusiasts, hikers, families and school groups.
The stages of the Weg der Blicke also offer a range of route options. Stage 8 follows woodland paths and crosses fields and open countryside, passing Blomenstein and Wendlinghausen Castle before continuing through a nature reserve to Dörentrup. Stage 9 is a 12.75-kilometre regional hiking trail of moderate difficulty in Dörentrup. The A1 Humfelder Hermannsblick walking trail is listed as a 10.16-kilometre themed trail of moderate difficulty. The fourth stage of the Hansaweg X9 long-distance trail runs 13.20 kilometres from Dörentrup to Extertal and is rated difficult. The stated lengths and difficulty ratings can help you plan your hikes. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a longer hike.
Castle and village history
With its unique architecture, Wendlinghausen Castle and Estate is one of the most magnificent buildings of the Weser Renaissance from the early 17th century. The castle park is open to the public. The castle is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. As access conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
In Hillentrup, a private local history museum is housed in the old fire station. Spread across two floors, it showcases everyday village life in times gone by. The exhibits cover schooling, doctors and pharmacies, crafts, household life and homes. The fire station was built in 1922. The museum focuses on various aspects of everyday life, while Wendlinghausen Castle brings architecture and building history to life.
Another place to visit is the Dörentrup Innovation Centre, also known as the NatourEnergieZentrum. It explores the tension between nature and sustainable energy production. For an overview of playgrounds, local clubs and associations, and the municipality’s sights, history and culture, the digital trail provides information at various locations in Dörentrup via QR-code information pillars.
Plan your stay around your interests
If you want to explore several hiking trails, you’ll plan differently than if you’re mainly interested in wildlife watching, the local history museum or seeing the castle from the outside. Dörentrup’s varied attractions give you specific starting points for finding accommodation to suit your own travel plans.
