Sandstone, historic sites and protected nature give Horn-Bad Meinberg its varied character. The Externsteine are a sandstone formation around 80 million years old. Two staircases carved into the rock allow visitors to climb up; the grounds and forecourt are freely accessible and offer numerous hiking trails. This lets you combine striking rock formations with outdoor activity. A 2006 description lists the Externsteine among Germany’s 77 most significant geotopes.

Rocky landscapes and trails

Horn-Bad Meinberg has five quality hiking trails, with routes up to 17.4 kilometres long. The maximum distance gives an indication of how extensive a hike can be. The Hermannsweg, Eggeweg and Bäderweg are also recommended hiking trails in the region. Together, these route names offer starting points for planning, whether you want a hike to be the focus of the day or part of a varied stay.

The Norderteich is a nature and bird sanctuary, as well as Lippe’s oldest nature reserve. A hike in the area can begin at the Norderteich car park. The Silberbach Valley, in turn, is a starting point for hikes to Velmerstot and its twin peaks. These offer different ways to experience nature: the protected area around Norderteich and the hiking destinations around Velmerstot.

Defensive tower, park and open-air theatre

The Eulenturm is a medieval defensive tower about 18 metres tall, built around 1500. The Historic Bad Meinberg Spa Park was laid out from 1767 in the late Baroque style and covers 6.25 hectares. The defensive architecture and landscaped park offer distinct historical highlights. The Bellenberg Open-Air Theatre adds another dimension: the open-air theatre has around 850 seats.

These differences can shape your travel plans without every interest needing to carry equal weight. If you are interested in historic architectural styles, the Eulenturm offers a medieval landmark; the spa park is an example of a later, expansive landscaped park. The open-air theatre adds a venue for performances under the open sky.

Lippe as a wider setting for hiking and culture

The wider Lippe destination has a network of around 2,000 kilometres of hiking trails. This includes part of the European long-distance path E1; the award-winning Hermannshöhen and Hansaweg trails are also part of the network. When planning your hikes, check trail conditions before setting out.

Lippe’s cultural history offers further perspectives across the wider destination: Renaissance buildings define seven historic town centres. The Weser Renaissance Museum in Lemgo explores the cultural history of the Weser region in the 16th and 17th centuries. This makes it possible to combine interests in nature and hiking with the region’s architectural and cultural history, without treating the individual destinations as one and the same.
