Rischenau brings together architectural traces of the former Biesterfeld estate, the Paradies Mill and seasonal herbal activities. The village offers several cultural perspectives: former estate buildings, preserved milling equipment and local history. As you plan your trip, you can consider which theme you would like to shape your stay. The wider destination of Lügde offers further themes.

Buildings from Biesterfeld’s history

In the Biesterfeld area of Rischenau, three buildings from the former estate have been preserved: the former forester’s house, the maids’ house, and the partly preserved brewery and distillery building. After a fire, the latter was converted into a riding hall. The focus, then, is on the former estate buildings and the changed use of one of them—a different historical perspective from the milling technology at the Paradies Mill.

Paradies Mill: Technology, local history and herbs

On the edge of Rischenau, the Paradies Mill preserves its historic milling equipment. It operates as a mill museum and a private local history museum, whose subjects are Rischenau and the former district of Lippe-Biesterfeld. This brings the history of technology and local history together in one museum setting. The Paradies Mill’s integrated offering includes a restaurant, a café and an inn serving food and drinks, as well as homemade cakes and tarts.

From April to October, the Paradies Mill offers guided herb walks and herbal workshops; group packages are available on request. You can choose between different interests: preserved milling equipment and local history on the one hand, and guided herbal activities on the other.

Getting to the Paradies Mill

If you would like to travel to the Paradies Mill by public transport, use the Bad Pyrmont or Lügde S-Bahn stations and the Rischenau “Alte Post” bus stop as reference points. Bus routes 595, 760, 761, 762 and 774 serve the stop. Check connections before travelling, as routes may change.

When looking for accommodation in Rischenau, you can first decide what to focus on: historic estate buildings, milling technology and herbal activities, or independent destinations in the wider destination of Lügde.

It was part of the former town fortifications and also served to protect against flooding; the historic town centre also includes defensive towers and half-timbered houses. The Easter Wheel Run takes place in Lügde every year on Easter Sunday evening and is organised by the Osterdechenverein Lügde e.V. If you are planning a visit around the event, check the details in advance.

Park and circular trails in Lügde

The Emmerauen Park on the edge of Lügde’s historic old town offers an adventure playground, the “Ankerplatz” café with a beer garden, and “Emmer Beach” with swimming and beach areas. All paths in the park are suitable for wheelchair users. Check seasonal details about the facilities.

The easy circular trails also vary in length: the short town walk through central Lügde is 2.62 kilometres long; the quality trail Klosterweg Falkenhagen is a 4.90-kilometre loop starting and ending at Falkenhagen Monastery.
