Lügde between city history and nature experiences

The city wall, about 1,500 metres long, is completely intact and surrounds the entire historic town centre. As part of the former town fortifications, it also served to protect against flooding; defensive towers and half-timbered houses further define the centre. This makes it possible to discover Lügde through tangible traces of its history, rather than just from a single viewpoint.

A special event in the annual calendar is the Easter Wheel Run. It takes place each year on the evening of Easter Sunday, the first day of Easter, and is organised by Osterdechenverein Lügde e.V. The tradition is recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the event details in advance.

Church, Dechenheim and Falkenhagen Monastery

St. Kilian's Church is considered a landmark of Lügde and is one of the oldest architectural monuments in Westphalia. The Romanesque building dates from around 1150, predating the town's founding. The Dechenheim is also connected to the town's history: it is housed in the former municipal fire station.

Another distinct point of interest is Falkenhagen, a district of Lügde. Falkenhagen Monastery, a well-preserved monastic complex, is located there. The former dormitory, dating from 1509, is considered the oldest dated half-timbered house in Lippe. The city wall, church and monastery offer different focal points for days when you would like to concentrate on historic buildings.

Circular trails, views and Emmerauenpark

For a walk through the town centre, the short town trail is a practical option: this easy circular route is 2.62 kilometres long. The Klosterweg Falkenhagen Quality Trail is also an easy circular route, covering 4.90 kilometres and starting and ending at the monastery. You can choose according to how much time you have: the town trail is shorter, while the monastery trail is longer and starts and finishes at the monastery. Check the route details before setting out.

The Osterbergweg Quality Trail starts and ends at the car park by St. Kilian's Church on Höxterstraße in Lügde. From a landscape lounger and a shelter, you can look out over the Lügde and Bad Pyrmont basin. This view adds a distinct impression of the landscape to the circular trails.

Emmerauenpark is a parkland area on the edge of the historic old town. Its facilities include an adventure playground, the Ankerplatz café with beer garden, and Emmer Beach, with swimming and beach areas. All paths in the park are wheelchair accessible. Check seasonal details about the facilities before planning your visit.

Lügde and the wider destination of Lippe

Across the wider destination of Lippe, the hiking trail network covers around 2,000 kilometres. It includes a section of European long-distance path E1, as well as the award-winning Hermannshöhen and Hansaweg trails. This regional perspective adds a broader hiking context to Lügde's specific circular trails.
