Discover Mülheim an der Ruhr
Accommodation in Mülheim an der Ruhr
Mülheim an der Ruhr can be explored from several angles: industrial heritage can be seen in a former water tower, museums focus on water and nature, and MüGa combines its location by the Ruhr with green spaces. There is also an open-air theatre and cycle paths. You can shape your stay around the experiences that interest you most—perhaps a museum, park, cultural event or a riverside tour.
Experience industrial heritage and nature in museums
A landmark of industrial heritage is the Aquarius Water Museum in Styrum. It is housed in a former water tower that is over 100 years old and is an anchor point on the Route of Industrial Heritage. More than 30 multimedia stations can be activated, including a virtual ride in the Ruhrmobil along the Ruhr. The view adds another distinctive feature: from a height of 35 metres, the museum offers views across the Ruhr landscape. The exhibits and the view offer different perspectives on the surroundings.
Haus Ruhrnatur is an interactive museum established in 1992 in a listed former boathouse for schoolchildren. The museum offers excursions in the surrounding area, focusing, for example, on waterbirds, small animals and floodplain landscapes. Alongside the Aquarius’s focus on technology and the Ruhr, nature is also a central theme. These topics range from animals to floodplain landscapes.
MüGa, Broich Castle and cultural events
MüGa offers a park experience of its own: the 66-hectare grounds lie directly on the Ruhr and include art installations, green picnic areas and cycle paths. Broich Castle and the Ringlokschuppen are within easy reach. MüGa regularly hosts numerous events. If you would like to combine your visit with an event, check the current programme; this lets you include both a visit to the park and a specific event in your plans.
Broich Castle offers another perspective on history. Its upper castle houses a historical museum with documents, paintings, models, weapons and archaeological finds from different periods. Important for planning: access to the interior is limited to guided tours or those with a rental interest. Since April 2024, an accessible historical adventure trail has also made the late Carolingian core of Broich Castle accessible. The museum collection and the trail offer different ways to explore this historic site.
The Mülheim an der Ruhr Open-Air Theatre offers culture beneath the open sky. As a natural amphitheatre, it has more than 2,000 seats. Its programme includes live music from various genres, cabaret and theatre. The different art forms give you a range of reasons to visit. Check the event dates in advance if you are planning to attend a performance.
Include the Ruhr and cycle paths in your plans
The Mülheim Water Station on Schleuseninsel is the main landing stage for the White Fleet. If you are considering a boat trip, check current services before travelling. This allows you to consider a cruise as a possible addition to your museum, park and cultural outings without planning your stay around an unverified timetable.
For cyclists, the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route runs for more than 14 kilometres through the Mülheim urban area. MüGa also has cycle paths. These two options offer different cycling experiences: a section of the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route within the city or paths within the park. Which option suits your stay depends on whether you would rather focus on the cycle route or MüGa.
