Silberg combines cultural history with experiences in a protected landscape. Schrabben Hof focuses on a listed group of buildings and themes related to rural life; Dollenbruch showcases moorland and wet meadow landscapes. There is also a small arts venue, a cultural church and marked hiking trails. You can tailor your stay to cultural discoveries, nature or a mix of both.

Cultural history and performing arts

Most of the Schrabben Hof building complex has been listed since 2002 and was established as a venue for social and cultural gatherings from 2003 onwards. The museum at Schrabben Hof features an exhibition on agriculture, Hauberg woodland management, horse-drawn transport and traditional crafts. These themes offer insight into various aspects of rural life and are of particular interest to travellers interested in the history of everyday life and work.

Schrabben Hof in Silberg is also home to a listed bakehouse dating from the 18th century. The local heritage museum has a small arts venue that has become a hub for theatre, music, literature and artistic activities. Both places complement the museum’s themes with architectural history and a cultural programme.

Since 2021, Silberg Church has also served as a cultural church alongside its liturgical role. It hosts exhibitions, readings and concerts; check the dates if you are planning to attend a particular event. It has also been agreed that the Weidenau Way of the Cross will be transferred to the cultural church as a permanent loan.

Dollenbruch and hiking trails

The Dollenbruch nature reserve lies between Brachthausen and Silberg. Covering around 98 hectares, it encompasses swamp forests, alder forests and open grassland with wet meadows and purple moor-grass meadows; it also includes Natura 2000 sites. The area provides valuable habitats for many rare and endangered animal and plant species. Forests and open meadows create distinct landscapes here.

The 4.5 km “Grenzgeschichten hautnah” (Border Stories Up Close) themed hiking trail offers a way to explore Dollenbruch. Entertaining podcast anecdotes bring cultural and natural history to life. In Silberg, the marked “Naturschätze am Kölschen Heck” (Natural Treasures of the Kölsche Heck) hiking trail follows Müsener Straße south to the area known as the Kölsche Heck.

The family-friendly circular route, also called “Naturschätze am Kölschen Heck” (Natural Treasures of the Kölsche Heck), starts and ends in Silberg. It is 9.2 km long, takes about 2.5 hours, is considered culturally interesting and passes through the Sellenbruch and Dollenbruch nature reserves. By comparison, the 4.5 km themed trail focuses on audio stories and exploring Dollenbruch; the longer loop connects two protected areas and offers an approximate time frame for planning your day.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

Two bus stops are listed for travelling by bus: Route R 92 towards Brachthausen stops at Silberg-Müsener Straße. Route R 91 goes to Kirchhundem-Silberg, Ort; this stop is only a few metres from Schrabben Hof. Check the current timetables before travelling.

The different route lengths and the approximate duration of the circular walk provide specific points of reference for planning.
