Discover Varste: Cycling Loop, Hiking Trails and Village History
Accommodation in Varste
Varste comes into focus through its connections to regional cycling and hiking routes: a cycling loop passes through the village, and the Brachtser Höhenweg also reaches it. In Silberg, exhibits offer insights into historic crafts and agriculture. Other cultural, nature and leisure destinations are located in the wider Kirchhundem destination.
Cycling and Hiking Routes Connected to Varste
The regional Welschen Ennest–Silberg–Kohlhagen cycling loop passes through Varste and returns through the village on the way back. Along the route, it follows the Silberbach River and runs by the Breitenbruch nature reserve towards Varste. The tour combines the character of a circular route with specific landscape features. Check local route conditions; seasonal conditions may vary.
The Brachtser Höhenweg also leads to Varste. There, it follows the white diamond trail marker along “Zur Kophelle” street to the Wegescheid hiking car park. Route details may change, so it is worth checking the current route before setting out. The “Naturschätze am Kölschen Heck” circular route reaches to just below Varste. Together, the tours offer different route connections: a cycling loop through the village, a hiking trail to the hiking car park, and another circular route that reaches to just below Varste.
Local History in Silberg
The local history museum at Kulturgut Schrabben Hof in Silberg showcases local exhibits from the 19th century. They focus on crafts, horse-drawn transport, Hauberg woodland management and agriculture. These themes offer different perspectives on historic work and village life in the Sauerland, adding a cultural highlight alongside the routes through the region.
More destinations in the wider Kirchhundem destination
Kirchhundem offers a variety of excursions and cultural attractions. Panorama Park Sauerland is an 80-hectare wildlife and adventure park. The historic Rhein-Weser-Turm on Westerberg in the Rothaargebirge offers a different focus: the 24-metre-high observation tower provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
The Rhein-Weser-Turm has a restaurant with a terrace serving regional dishes, coffee and cake; overnight accommodation is also available. Confirm dining options and accommodation before travelling, as these may change. In winter, there is also a cross-country skiing centre with a ski school and ski hire, as well as the starting point of the extensive Rothaarloipe trail network. Opening and hire availability may vary by season.
Hikes in the wider Kirchhundem area can be planned in different ways. A 14.4-kilometre stage of the Rothaarsteig leads from the Rhein-Weser-Turm through the Schwarzbachtal nature reserve and the Heinsberger Hochheide to the Ginsberger Heide; along the way, it passes the Dreiherrnstein and the source of the Ferndorf. The Rothaarsteig Spur Oberhundemer Bergtour is a signposted premium circular trail that starts and ends at the hiking portal at Haus des Gastes in the Oberhundem spa gardens. Its route passes through forests, by rugged rocks and to panoramic viewpoints on the Kahleberg. Audio tours on various circular hiking routes from 5 to 10 kilometres also bring the cultural history along the former border between the Sauerland, Siegerland and Wittgensteiner Land to life through anecdotes and stories.
The Schwarzbachsystem with Haberg and Krenkeltal nature reserve is another defining feature of Kirchhundem’s natural heritage. It covers 312 hectares and consists of six separate areas; its defining feature is the natural, extensive and highly branched stream system of the Schwarzbach, the Meinscheidbach and their tributaries. A disused railway tunnel between Krenkeltal and Schwarzbachtal is an important winter roost for bats.
