Discover Büren: Baroque, Mills and Wewelsburg
Accommodation in Büren
Büren appeals to travelers who want to combine Baroque architecture, vivid local history and outdoor experiences. The Jesuit Church of “Maria Immaculata” stands in the town center, the Mittel and Bohr mills are located in the Almeauen, and Wewelsburg and Harth add further historical highlights. Activities range from a roughly one-hour mill tour to a 44-kilometer circular cycling route.
Baroque Architecture and Mill History
The Jesuit Church of “Maria Immaculata” is considered one of the most splendid Baroque works in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located in Büren’s town center and was built in the late Baroque style between 1754 and 1773, based on plans by Franz Heinrich Roth. The construction period, architect and style provide a specific historical context for a visit to the church.
The Mittel and Bohr mills are located in the Almeauen, by the old town wall and millstream, within sight of the Jesuit church. Today, they are an “interactive museum” for visitors of all ages. During the summer months, public tours lasting about 60 minutes are held regularly. They explain the history of the mill and demonstrate the practical workings of an old stone mill; months with special events are excluded. Check the seasonal schedule before planning a visit for a specific day.
Exploring the Almeauen
The Almeauen form an extensive park landscape with circular walking trails, a nature trail and a Nordic walking course. Those wishing to vary their time outdoors can consider these activities as separate options for planning their day. For a bike ride, there is the Auen Cycle Route: the 44-kilometer circular route starts at the Jesuit church in Büren. This offers both short explorations of the park landscape and a longer, clearly defined cycling route as distinct activity options.
Museums with Vivid Insights
The Bernhard Wolff School Museum of the town of Büren depicts school life during the German Empire through furniture, pictures, documents and posters. Its centerpiece is a classroom dating from around the turn of the century. Visitors can write on slates with a slate pencil, providing a direct experience of a historical writing practice that adds another dimension to the collection.
The St. Sebastian Brotherhood Büren Shooting Museum is located in the Eulenturm on the eastern wall of the town fortifications. Its two floors display old documents, everyday objects, uniforms and flags. Compared with the school museum, it offers a different perspective on local history: school life and lessons here, the heritage of the shooting brotherhood there.
Wewelsburg and Ringelstein
Wewelsburg was built between 1603 and 1609 in the Weser Renaissance style as a triangular castle in Büren’s Wewelsburg district. The museum on the history of the former Prince-Bishopric of Paderborn presents the history of the Paderborn region in 29 rooms, from the first settlements to secularization in 1802. The castle’s architectural history and a broader historical overview come together at this site.
In the Büren district of Harth, the Ringelstein castle ruins were the scene of numerous witch trials during the Thirty Years’ War and served as a court for the Lordship of Büren. Evidence of these trials can be found in the witch cellar belonging to the ruins. This historical connection sets Ringelstein apart from Büren’s museums, which center on collections and exhibits.
