Hennef (Sieg): Trails, History and Discoveries
Accommodation in Hennef
In Hennef (Sieg), the themes range from Beethoven and a centuries-old pilgrimage to fossils, scales and floodplain landscapes along the Sieg. Several trails are designed for children and families; others lead to historic buildings, through a former wine-growing landscape or to geological features. You can shape your stay around culture, nature or a mix of both.
Stories to discover along the way
Hennef is one of 22 stops on the Beethoven tour. It connects places in Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district where Ludwig van Beethoven is known to have been in person: eleven stops are in Bonn and another eleven in the Rhein-Sieg district. A different view of local history is offered by the route to 36 historic buildings. It leads from the Old Town Hall in Hennef to Haus Telegraph in Hennef-Söven; the history of each building is briefly explained at the individual stops.
The Hennef Scales Hiking Trail also tells a special story. Its 22 stops run from the town hall via Zissendorfer Hof to the railway station and celebrate the history of Hennef’s invention of weighing and measuring. The Chronos scale can be viewed at several locations. At the town hall, meanwhile, fossils millions of years old from the Hennef-Rott fossil site are permanently on display in the exhibition “Crocodiles under Palm Trees – Mining in Hennef-Rott”.
In Bödingen, the pilgrimage tradition is still centered on the miraculous image of Mary; the original is housed in the church “Zur schmerzhaften Mutter” (Our Lady of Sorrows). For 600 years, the Compassion Festival has been celebrated there on the fourth Friday after Easter. The Marian Way leads to the Marienbrünnchen, known as a healing spring, with an interpretive stop, and continues to the richly decorated pilgrimage church.
Children’s trails with different themes
Opened in 2025, the Hennef Family Hiking Trail loops around the Rosental through meadows, pastures, woodland and fields. Along the way, children learn about the environment, agriculture, nature conservation and biodiversity in a playful way. You can choose between a 3.7-kilometre short loop and a 5.5-kilometre long loop. The trail also features two information stations, nine interactive activity stations, several places to rest, an extra-large bench and a drinking fountain. It is particularly suited to families with children aged around six and up.
In central Hennef, the children’s hiking trail has a different focus: over 2.7 kilometres and at ten stops, children aged four to eight explore the town centre with adult support. In Stadt Blankenberg, the children’s adventure trail “Save Stadt Blankenberg” invites visitors to solve puzzles at eight stops around and through the town. Along the way, children fill in the gaps in a mysterious parchment. The trails therefore differ not only in length, but also in whether they focus on nature, the town centre or a puzzle story.
Stadt Blankenberg: castle, museum and wine-growing history
The main castle of Stadt Blankenberg, a medieval fortress in the Rhineland built between 1150 and 1180, and its outbuildings are under the care of the City of Hennef. The local history museum is housed in the 13th-century Katharinenturm; its exhibits include a true-to-scale model of Stadt Blankenberg and its castle complex. The Wine Museum in the Runenhaus explores the centuries-long history of winegrowing. The wine hiking trail through the former vineyards also begins there.
An audio tour links twelve listening points along a route of around two kilometres, from the Katharinenturm to the castle. Its content can be accessed on a smartphone via the Lauschtour app. If you are interested in the landscape around the historic sites, the Kulturlandweg offers a different perspective: the circular route starts and ends at Hennef (Sieg) railway station; alternatively, you can start at the Siegdamm hiking car park and finish the loop there.
Floodplain landscapes and geological insights
The Kulturlandweg follows the Sieg embankment through a floodplain landscape lined with old lime trees. Above overgrown former vineyard terraces, it leads to a higher-lying rest area; remains of the former Ziethen mine can also be seen by the Sieg. The approximately 200-kilometre Natursteig Sieg quality hiking trail offers a wider perspective: three of its stages run entirely or partly through Hennef, on the section from Siegburg to Mudersbach.
At Steimelsberg above the spa park in Hennef-Geistingen, the Hennef Rock Garden introduces visitors to the region’s geological history with 22 rock formations. Another nature route, the Burgweg, leads to fishponds and the “Ahrenbachtal and Adscheider Tal” nature reserve. In the spa park, the Kurhaus, opened in 1912, recalls the town’s history and the teachings of Sebastian Kneipp: it has since been converted into a modern senior living residence and, together with the adjacent Kurhauspromenade, forms an ensemble.
If you plan your day around the Kulturlandweg, Hennef (Sieg) railway station is a convenient starting point; it is served by RE9, S12 and S19 trains. Check the current timetable before travelling. When choosing your accommodation, you can then consider whether family trails, historic sites or nature paths are the main focus of your stay.
