Discover Wachtberg
Accommodation in Wachtberg
Wachtberg brings together nature-themed attractions and cultural history with recurring events. Along the Apple Route, a fruit-growing trail introduces visitors to fruit cultivation in the Drachenfelser Ländchen; the Naturpark Rheinland Fire Route also offers insights into Rodderberg and Dächelsberg. A chapel, a mill and summer cultural weeks add to these experiences. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between themed trails, historic sites and events with dates that change from year to year.
The Apple Route and landscape themes
Between Berkum and Kürrighoven, a fruit-growing trail runs directly alongside the Apple Route, offering insights into fruit cultivation in the Drachenfelser Ländchen. The Wachtberg section of the Rhineland Apple Route has two stations with information and hands-on activities for the whole family. The 124-kilometre Apple Route passes through Alfter, Bornheim, Swisttal, Rheinbach, Meckenheim and Wachtberg. It can also be explored via six loop trails. The Naturpark Rheinland Fire Route offers insights into Rodderberg and Dächelsberg. While the Apple Route focuses on fruit cultivation, the Fire Route draws attention to these two landscape features.
A chapel, a mill and a summer programme
The Nepomuk Chapel, also known as the Anton Raaff Chapel, is in Holzem and was donated in 1744 by tenor singer Anton Raaff. The historic Broicher Mill, a commercially operated watermill, is in Wachtberg’s Villip district. It was first mentioned in a document in 886 and still grinds flour. If you would like to visit the mill, check with the operator in advance.
The Landpartie takes place every year at Adendorf Castle, from Ascension Day through the following Sunday; the exact dates vary from year to year. The Wachtberg Cultural Weeks are also a recurring summer event: they last 17 days and feature music, literature, painting and theatre. Dates and programmes change each year, so check the dates for the relevant edition before your trip. The Landpartie and the Cultural Weeks offer different timeframes: a period from Ascension Day through the following Sunday, or a 17-day summer programme.
The wider region: Rhein-Sieg-Kreis
Within the wider Rhein-Sieg-Kreis travel destination, four regions are particularly relevant for tourism: the Siebengebirge, the Siegtal, the Bergisches Land and the Rhein-Voreifel region. In this broader context, Rodderberg is a geological feature of note: just 500 metres from the Rolandbogen basalt cone, it brings together volcanic rocks from different periods in a combination unique in Central Europe. Hiking in Rhein-Sieg-Kreis includes the certified quality trails Natursteig Sieg, Bergischer Weg and Rheinsteig. Cycle routes for visitors pass through varied natural and cultural landscapes and cater to leisurely cyclists, sporty cyclists and e-bike riders.
Stadt Blankenberg offers another glimpse into the past: the settlement grew from a castle built by Counts Heinrich II and Eberhart II of Sayn on a rocky promontory above the Sieg. An observation platform with a telescope on the Georgsturm tower at Blankenberg Castle offers views across the Siegtal and the surrounding area. The local history museum is housed in the Katharinenturm, a gate tower in the Neustadt dating from the 13th century, in Stadt Blankenberg. The wine museum in the so-called “Runenhaus” also offers insight into the centuries-long history of winegrowing in Stadt Blankenberg; the wine trail through the former vineyards starts there.
