Odenthal between monastic history and hiking trails
Accommodation in Odenthal
Odenthal combines gently rolling, green countryside with striking traces of monastic history and village life. Forests, meadows, and stream valleys shape the hiking landscape; Altenberg Cathedral, preserved monastery buildings, and the historic center add their own cultural highlights. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether you want to devote your days mainly to hiking, Altenberg, or cycling tours.
Trails through the countryside and monastic history
Odenthal’s hiking trails are part of a well-marked network. The Odenthal Culture and Forest Nature Trail is a signposted circular route of about 3.8 kilometers; the walking time is approximately one and a half hours. Trail conditions can change. So check the current condition of the trail and its markings before setting out.
The approximately 1.4-kilometer Bergisch Comfort Walk leads around Altenberg Cathedral and includes exhibits and rest areas. In terms of distance, it is shorter than the Culture and Forest Nature Trail, while placing a particular emphasis on the cathedral landscape. Check accessibility and trail conditions before your visit. The Altenberg Monastic Landscape Trail is a circular route with information panels about monastic life in Altenberg and its immediate surroundings; trail conditions may change seasonally.
The landscape itself also offers a variety of viewpoints: hikes in Odenthal and Altenberg pass through green, gently rolling terrain with forests, meadows, and stream valleys. The DhĂĽnn and Eifgenbach waterways are associated with Odenthal. The Water Route follows the DhĂĽnn to the GroĂźe DhĂĽnn Dam; conditions may change seasonally.
Altenberg and the historic center
Altenberg Cathedral was built between 1259 and 1379 as a Gothic abbey church. For centuries, it served as the burial church of the Counts of Berg. The surviving buildings of the former monastery that visitors can see include St. Mark’s Chapel, the Old Brewery, Altenberger Hof, the Baroque Gate, and the Küchenhof. This makes it possible to explore the architectural history not only at the cathedral but also in other surviving parts of the former monastery complex.
In the historic center, half-timbered houses stand around the Romanesque Church of St. Pankratius, one of the oldest churches in the Bergisches Land. The bronze Witches’ Fountain recalls the history of witch trials in Odenthal. These places offer different perspectives on the past, from medieval monastic life to local history.
Getting around, buses, and cycling
The I-Punkt Altenberg is the central tourist information office for visitors to the Bergisches Land. It provides information about local culture and nature, tour bookings, brochures, and maps. Services may change; check the latest information before visiting. Altenberg can be reached by bus routes 212, 267, 432, and BBO4. The Bergisch Hiking Bus runs on summer weekends and public holidays. Check the timetables before your trip.
For cycling tours, Odenthal offers routes through river valleys and across elevated terrain with scenic views. Odenthal’s signposted junction system is described as a way to put together routes to suit your own needs. To round off the Bergisch Comfort Walk, nearby restaurants offer Bergisch waffles, Potthucke, and herb salads. Restaurant offerings and menus may change.
Odenthal in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis
The wider travel destination of Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis lies at the crossroads of the greater Cologne area and the scenic Bergisches Land. As a regional route option, the aqualon Circuit is signposted throughout. Its recommended direction runs from Wermelskirchen via HĂĽckeswagen and Odenthal-Altenberg to Burscheid and back to Wermelskirchen. The Bergisch Bicycle Bus also runs with a bicycle trailer along the Balkantrasse and, since 2019, has provided a connection to Bergisch Gladbach via Odenthal. The seasonal service runs from Easter to the end of October; check that it is operating before you travel.
The stated trail distances, the approximate walking time for the Culture and Forest Nature Trail, and the seasonal transport services provide concrete points of reference for planning your trip.
