Discover Rösrath: Castle, heathland and hiking trails
Accommodation in Rösrath
Rösrath can be discovered through a range of very different impressions: Schloss Eulenbroich sits beside a small lake in a park, while Wahner Heide and Königsforst define the natural landscape. There is also a sculpture garden, a historic air-raid shelter tunnel, hiking trails and the Hoffnungsthal outdoor swimming pool. This brings culture, landscape, outdoor activities and water together as distinct themes. When choosing where to stay, it may help to first consider which of these aspects you want to shape your trip.
Schloss Eulenbroich: Park setting and a short walk from the train station
Schloss Eulenbroich combines a place steeped in history with a striking landscape setting: the castle stands beside a small lake and is nestled in a park. Water, greenery and the building create a shared setting for your visit. The castle is a five-minute walk from Rösrath train station – a useful reference point for planning your journey and day. Its setting distinguishes this cultural stop from the hiking trails and nature experiences that are also part of Rösrath.
Places of history and art
The air-raid shelter tunnel is located on Rotdornallee in Hoffnungsthal. It is the largest surviving air-raid shelter in the Rösrath municipal area from the Second World War. As a memorial and learning site, it offers a different way to engage with the town’s history. The Rösrath History Society offers guided tours of the tunnel. If you would like to visit, arrange your visit with the society.
The sculpture garden on Brander Straße offers a very different perspective. Set amid nature on an area of around 1,500 square metres, it features sculptures, installations and artworks by artists from Rösrath. The different art forms make the garden a distinct point of interest alongside the historic sites. The exhibition may change seasonally.
Heathland, hiking trails and an outdoor swimming pool
Rösrath is located in Königsforst and the Wahner Heide nature reserve. Turmhof Heath Centre lies in the eastern part of Wahner Heide, within the Rösrath municipal area. Numerous nature-focused excursions into the heart of the nature reserve regularly set off from there. The heath centre also houses a shop selling heathland products and a heathland library; stocks and offerings may vary.
Two hiking trails differ considerably in length and format. The 259-kilometre Bergischer Weg passes through Rösrath on one of its 14 stages. The Bergbauweg Rösrath, by contrast, is a circular hiking trail of around twelve kilometres. The options range from a section of a longer, multi-stage route to a local circular trail with a total length of approximately twelve kilometres.
The Hoffnungsthal outdoor swimming pool adds a place to swim to these nature and cultural experiences. It has a swimming pool with a diving tower, a non-swimmer pool with a wide water slide, and a children’s pool with a rainbow slide and parasols. The different pools cater to different interests; seasonal opening times may vary.
