Niederbergheim is picturesquely situated in the Möhne Valley, on the edge of Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. Marked circular trails, the Skywalk Möhne Valley, protected landscapes and a history of technology and culture give the area its distinctive character. As you plan, you can decide whether to devote your day mainly to the hiking trails, the natural landscape or a cultural landmark. The specific trail lengths make it easier to compare routes by distance.

Landscape and Natural Environment

The existing Merpke Valley Nature Reserve protects a varied, open stretch of the Merpke Valley and its tributaries. The landscape includes both dry and wet grassland, as well as spring areas, aquatic habitats and woody vegetation. Alongside the marked trails and historic sights, this diverse landscape is a focal point.

Hiking Trails and Getting Your Bearings

There are two Arnsberg Forest Nature Park hiking car parks in the Niederbergheim area: the car park on Schillingsweg at the western edge of the village, and the one on Eisenberg on the L 856 between Niederbergheim and Hirschberg. From the designated car park, the Skywalk Möhne Valley can be reached on foot in 15 to 20 minutes. The Skywalk is accessible. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the parking options and trail conditions.

From the hiking car park on Schillingsweg, you can walk the marked circular trails A 9 (7.4 km) and A 12 (3.2 km). This gives you two routes of different lengths to choose from: A 12 is the shorter loop, and A 9 the longer one. If distance matters when planning your day, use these kilometre figures as a specific criterion for choosing a route. Another short circular hike runs from Niederbergheim to Oberbergheim, with a particular focus on connecting the two villages.

Local Cultural History

The Niederbergheim Mill was built in 1551. The “Old Saw Gate in Niederbergheim,” by contrast, highlights the history of technology used in forestry and wood processing. This technical cultural monument commemorates the centuries-long importance of these activities to the village and is located right on the Möhne Valley Cycle Route. Here, the cycle route and a local cultural theme come together at a named site.

More Things to Do and Choosing Your Accommodation

“Möhni’s World,” an extracurricular learning centre, is located in the Möhne meadows between Warstein-Allagen and Niederbergheim. The Skywalk Möhne Valley is on Liethhöhe between Niederbergheim and Allagen and is part of the “3 Landscape Experience Worlds” LEADER project. If you would like to include learning centres or regional projects in your trip alongside hiking trails, you will find a range of other topics here.

Decide whether hiking trails, nature or cultural history should be your main focus, then compare the locations of the accommodation options with your plans. This will help you choose a base that suits the experiences you want to include.

Hiking in the Wider Warstein Destination

In the wider Warstein destination, the 35-metre-high Lörmecke Tower offers panoramic views from the Hochsauerland region across the Haar ridge and the Westphalian Bay to the Teutoburg Forest. Two local hiking trails also differ in length and route: the 16.5-kilometre Hiking Trail 1 links the Bilsteintal valley, Paradies, Hubertusquelle, Lörmecke Tower, the Lörmecke Tower car park and Sedansteich pond. The 6.3-kilometre Hiking Trail 2 runs from the Lörmecke Tower car park via Kapellenplatz and back to Lörmecke Tower. The routes differ considerably in length, and their respective waypoints also show how their courses vary.
