Bevergern combines architectural and local history with a story of the trails and the landscape around the Huckberg. The castle, St. Mary's Parish Church, the Küsterei and Levedags Mill each tell a different story about the town's past. The Teutoschleife Bevergerner Pättken offers a different perspective: here, the trail climbs to a narrow ridge with views across the Tecklenburger Land.

History told through buildings

Bevergern Castle is an archaeological monument and significant to the history of Bevergern, the Tecklenburger Land and the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. St. Mary's Parish Church also reveals several layers of history. The Late Gothic hall church, with its polygonal choir, dates from the 15th century and features rich interior furnishings. The tower was raised in 1686 using ashlar from Bevergern Castle, which was demolished with explosives in 1680; further additions followed in 1759, 1767 and 1937.

The Küsterei offers a different picture of historic architecture: this half-timbered house with a hipped roof dates from 1663 and is one of Bevergern's oldest houses. Formerly a farmer-citizen's house, it has a large threshing floor behind the entrance gate. Levedags Mill adds an unusual detail to this architectural history: it was built in 1804 on the foundations of an old gun tower.

The story of the trail and its views

The Nonnenpättken recalls the troubled times after the Thirty Years' War. When danger threatened, the canonesses of Gravenhorst Abbey used this old escape route to reach their town house in Bevergern. The name of the Pättken is thus linked to a specific story about its users at the time and their destination.

The Teutoschleife Bevergerner Pättken, by contrast, puts the landscape in the foreground. The route climbs to the Huckberg, gaining around 40 metres in elevation. From the crest of the narrow ridge, there are views across the Tecklenburger Land. These offer different options for planning your trip: local history and buildings on the one hand, and a described route with an ascent and scenic views on the other.

More to discover in the wider destination of Hörstel

Those exploring the wider destination of Hörstel as well as Bevergern will find more cultural attractions there. For more than ten years, the DA Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst has offered a space to experience contemporary, interdisciplinary art and culture through participation and discussion. With its church, convent buildings, mill, mill pond, bakery and brewhouse, monastery wall and historic bridges, the former monastery presents the picture of an almost completely preserved monastic complex.

The DA Kunsthaus offers tours about the monastery's history and art, as well as theatrical tours featuring historical characters on the first and third Sunday of each month. Group tours can be booked by arrangement. If a tour is part of your plans, check the specific date in advance.

Hörstel's landscape and leisure activities offer other possibilities, too. The 57-hectare Torfmoor recreational area includes the Torfmoorsee, or peat bog lake, of the same name. You can sail, fish and surf on the lake; there is also a sandy beach and a sunbathing lawn for relaxing in the sun. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check the relevant conditions in advance. Hörstel's landscape is also shaped by the transition from the Münsterland park landscape to the Teutoburg Forest, with the 95-metre-high Huckberg.

For those interested in equestrian sports, the Riesenbeck International equestrian centre in Hörstel offers training and competitions. Alongside art and monastic history, the wider destination of Hörstel therefore also offers lake activities and equestrian sports.
