Lienen – Nature Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Lienen
Those who want to combine nature, outdoor activities and local history in Lienen will find a range of options. The Holperdorper Teutoschleife and the Hermannsweg lead through the countryside; a digital tour brings together historical and current images, audio and texts. Other options include a sensory nature park, a viewing platform, and activities involving cycling, rail and water. You can tailor your stay to the experiences that matter most to you.
Hiking trails and countryside in Lienen
The 13 km circular “Holperdorper” trail is one of eight Teutoschleifen in the Tecklenburger Land. From Lienen, it leads through colorful meadows and extensive forests. The Lienener Osning nature reserve, with the ridges of the Teutoburg Forest, invites visitors to walk and hike all year round along this Teutoschleife and the Hermannsweg.
The Holperdorper Valley lies in the northern part of Lienen, beyond the Teutoburg Forest, and is known for its picturesque scenery. The Duvensteine are a striking rock formation there, on the border with Lower Saxony. Access on foot may be restricted by vegetation. A viewing platform at the hiking car park on Zum Steinbruch road offers views of the quarry and the MĂĽnsterland parkland.
The Hermannsweg passes through Lienen and runs for a total of 156 km from Rheine to Velmerstot. Its section in Lienen crosses Westerbecker Berg, the highest point in the MĂĽnsterland. The route distances help distinguish between the options: the Holperdorper is a 13 km circular trail, while 156 km refers to the entire Hermannsweg route.
Church and digital local history
The Protestant Church of Lienen has a still-visible Romanesque tower dating from a 12th-century building. It is the church’s oldest visible building fabric. The church is also the starting point for the digital tour “Historic Lienen.”
A 2020 description presents this tour as a 3.5 km route. It combines historical and current images, audio, texts and augmented reality. Visitors can access it via the free “Future History” app on a smartphone or through a web version. The tour connects local history with a range of digital formats.
More experiences: park, cycling and water
The BARFUSS-PARK Lienen offers a sensory nature experience along a 1 km route. Materials include wood, stones, bark mulch, grass, clay and water. In both length and experience, the park differs from the 13 km Holperdorper and the 3.5 km digital tour.
Cyclists also have a specific route option: the northern loop of the 100 Castles Route is 35 km long. It can start in Lienen at the Haus des Gastes, or alternatively at Kattenvenne station. The Haus des Gastes is right by the village pond in the town center; the Lienen Tourist Information office is also located there.
From Lienen station, the Eisenbahntradition association offers trips on historic trains, including steam locomotives and carriages. For a different kind of activity, the indoor pool area at the Lienen indoor and outdoor swimming pool has 200 m² of water. So, alongside hiking and cycling routes, train rides and an indoor pool are also available as independent options for planning your stay.
Plan your stay in Lienen
The different route lengths and formats give you a concrete basis for making your choice, without requiring every day to follow the same pattern. This makes it easy to choose accommodation to match the activities that interest you most in Lienen.
