Metelen is located in the parkland landscape of the western Münsterland and combines scenic experiences with a long history of monasteries and collegiate foundations. The town traces its origins to a monastery founded by Friduwi on the River Vechte in 889. Amid heathland, wetlands and historic buildings, you’ll find a range of themes for your stay: explore the outdoors, discover architectural history, or learn about collections and exhibits. Which accommodation is right for your trip depends above all on whether you want to devote more of your days to trails and landscapes or to cultural attractions.

Landscape and Tours

The area around Metelen is characterised by sandy soils, forests and wetlands. The scenery changes within just a few kilometres. One way to actively experience this variety is the approximately 27-kilometre “Around Metelen” cycle tour. It passes through the Metelener Heide Landscape Conservation Area and the Strönfeld Nature Reserve. When planning your tour, it’s worth checking current route conditions.

For a longer ride, the 62-kilometre Triangel cycle route links Metelen, Neuenkirchen, Ochtrup, Rheine, Steinfurt and Wettringen. This offers two different scales: a roughly 27-kilometre loop around Metelen and a route that takes in several towns. Metelen Land railway station is also a starting point for walks or cycle rides into the Metelener Heide.

For a walk with a historical connection, the Wallweg follows Metelen’s old fortifications. It offers a way to explore the town’s history on foot, while the cycle tours focus on the landscape and regional connections.

Monastery, Collegiate Foundation and Local History

The Catholic parish church shapes Metelen’s skyline. Construction probably began in the late 11th or early 12th century. The present-day parish church and the south wing of the dormitory date from the monastery period. The collegiate period is represented by the abbey dating from 1720, the collegiate wall and the former curia. These buildings reflect different periods in local history, which began with Metelen’s monastic origins.

Smaller cultural attractions offer their own highlights: the Ackerbürgerhaus provides a historic setting in which to linger. The collegiate treasury contains treasures connected with Metelen’s economic and cultural life.

Discover Mill and Railway History

Plagemann’s Mill stands on the River Vechte and is considered one of the oldest mills in the region. The restored mill has turbine-powered machinery and serves as a mill and sawmill museum, with more than 700 exhibits. It combines a historic building with an extensive collection; visitor information may change, so it’s advisable to check the latest visitor information before your visit.

The Railway Museum is housed in the station building at Metelen Land railway station, between Metelen and Wettringen. Exhibits include an old signal box, a locomotive, a handcar and other railway equipment. Visitors can also try a faithful replica of a handcar, powered by their own muscle strength. The station is also a starting point for trails into the Metelener Heide, combining a museum visit with a possible walk or cycle ride.

More Excursion Ideas and a Regional Perspective

The “Around Metelen” cycle tour also takes in the Dino Zoo and a mini-golf course. The family-friendly nature mini-golf course is in the Metelener Heide, right next to the Dino Zoo Metelen. When planning your trip, you can weigh up these leisure activities against the landscape and history attractions without trying to fit everything into the same day. If you plan to visit the museum, Dino Zoo or mini-golf course, check the latest visitor information in advance.

On a broader level, the Steinfurt destination offers its own regional setting: the District of Steinfurt is a varied holiday region with parkland and numerous manor houses, moated castles, monasteries and palaces. The 100 Castles Route connects important architectural monuments in the District of Steinfurt. This wider regional perspective complements Metelen’s local attractions with a separate focus on the district as a whole.
