Neuenkirchen brings together cultural history, water and activity: St. Anna Parish Church is an example of Romanesque Revival architecture, while Villa Hecking and the local history museum tell different sides of local history. At Offlumer See, a former gravel pit and natural areas meet a circular walking trail; various cycling routes offer other perspectives. Plan your stay around the experiences that interest you most.

Architectural Heritage and Local History

St. Anna Parish Church was built between 1896 and 1899 in the Romanesque Revival style. Its construction period and architectural style offer a specific starting point for anyone interested in architecture to place the building in its historical context. Romanesque Revival refers to an approach inspired by Romanesque forms.

Villa Hecking is a listed villa more than 200 years old. It was built as the residence of the Hecking textile manufacturing family. The park is suitable for walks; the sculptures there were created by artist Otmar Alt. Musical brunches and open-air performances are also held in the park. The programme may vary by season, so if you are interested in attending an event, it is advisable to check the relevant dates.

The local history museum opened in 2001. It presents traditional crafts and rural life; a permanent exhibition displays finds thousands of years old from limestone and gravel pits around Neuenkirchen. This brings themes from everyday life in the past together with finds from much earlier periods. A concept for a new local history museum at Haus Temmen on Alphons-Hecking-Platz is also associated with the local heritage association.

Enjoy the Water and Nature

Offlumer See was created from a former gravel pit and developed into a recreational area. Large areas have been left to develop naturally. A walk along the circular trail around the lake takes about an hour and a half; there are opportunities along the way to observe flora and fauna. This lets you set aside a specific amount of time for a walk while focusing on nature.

Neuenkirchen's natural swimming area includes a natural lake and a beach. Together with the loop around Offlumer See, it offers another option for travellers who want to include water and nature in their plans.

Cycling Routes of Different Lengths

The RadBahn Münsterland runs through Neuenkirchen along a former railway line between Coesfeld and Rheine. The Triangel is a cycling route about 62 kilometres long, connecting the town centres of Metelen, Neuenkirchen, Ochtrup, Rheine, Steinfurt and Wettringen. The 36-kilometre Lerchenroute is one of the NaTourismus cycling routes in the northern Steinfurt region; its landscape highlights include fields, poppies and waterscapes. The stated distances allow for a direct comparison: 36 kilometres for the Lerchenroute, compared with about 62 kilometres for the Triangel. Details of the Lerchenroute may change; check the current signs on site.

Travel Planning Information

Steinfurt District has 116 nature reserves covering a total area of around 13,231 hectares, as well as 78 landscape conservation areas covering around 27,774 hectares. These area figures may change as new designations are made. The numbers give a broader picture of nature in the region, while the roughly one-and-a-half-hour loop around Offlumer See offers a specific suggestion for a walk.

KURTI, the local visitor information and cultural services office, is located at Hauptstraße 36. Its remit includes culture, entertainment, regional topics, tourism and information.
