Discover Tecklenburg: Castle backdrop, half-timbered houses and hiking trails
Accommodation in Tecklenburg
Tecklenburg combines the setting of a historic old town with stage performances, distinctive cultural venues and trails through the forest. When looking for a place to stay, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on: Should a musical performance shape your stay, would you like to visit museums and exhibitions, or would you rather make time for the spa park and a trail? The different sides of this hilltop town offer ideas for planning your trip.
Stage performances in a historic setting
The Tecklenburg Open-Air Theater uses the historic atmosphere as a backdrop for elaborate musical productions and attracts nearly 100,000 visitors from across Germany each year. The open-air stage is set within the ruins of a medieval castle. As a permanent venue, it has more than 2,300 seats, 1,800 of them covered; the program varies. If you would like to plan your stay around a particular production, you should take the current program into account. The special combination of castle ruins and musical theater makes a visit to the theater a distinctive way to experience Tecklenburg.
Old town, Torhaus and puppet museum
The Torhaus Legge stands in the heart of the old town, its striking arched gateway helping define the town. The building was erected in 1577 and expanded in 1660, at the behest of Count Mauritz of Tecklenburg, into a linen inspection office, known as the Legge. Today, it hosts changing art exhibitions throughout the year, which can generally be visited on weekends. As the exhibitions change, checking what is currently on offer is part of planning your visit.
The puppet museum is housed in a historic half-timbered house dating from 1684 and contains one of North Rhine-Westphalia’s most valuable puppet collections. On display are the Botsch and Nahrath collections, dollhouses, toy shops and a wide range of toys from past decades. Some works by the painter Otto Modersohn are also among the exhibits. The museum thus brings together different perspectives: toys and collections sit alongside works by a painter.
Spa park and trails for different kinds of days
Tecklenburg Spa Park lies in a valley in the heart of the hilltop town. Its amenities include a Kneipp pool, a medicinal herb garden and a boules court. At QR code stations, you can also learn about the herb garden and foot-bathing pool without a guide; the stations provide videos on your smartphone. This lets you combine a visit to the park with digital information in your own way.
For a walk through the forest, signs in the old town point to the 4 km Hexenpfad (Witches’ Trail). It offers children opportunities to climb; sturdy footwear is recommended. The “Teutostadtschleife Tecklenburger Romantik” is a different option in terms of length and difficulty: it is a moderately difficult, 6.3 km circular hike starting and ending at the Burgberg parking lot in Tecklenburg. Check the route details before setting out. The “Hexenritt und Düvelskram” (Witches’ Ride and Devilry) legends trail begins just outside Tecklenburg. Tecklenburg is also part of the North Course Castles Route in the Tecklenburger Land.
Plan festivals and your journey
The traditional Tecklenburg Wine Festival takes place on the first weekend of September in the historic market square. Winemakers from renowned German wine regions with long traditions present selected wines there. The St. Nicholas Market is held in the historic old town from Friday to Sunday on the second weekend of Advent; the exact dates may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the dates of the events.
Specific stops are also listed for getting there: On its route between Ibbenbüren and Bad Laer, the Teuto-Express stops at the old railway station in Tecklenburg. Bus route R45 runs to the “Tecklenburg-Stadt” stop. Check the current timetables for your journey.
