Betzdorf combines extensive hiking routes with architectural and railway history. The Hellerhöhenweg starts at the train station and first leads through the pedestrian zone; farther up, views open out over the Daadetal valley and Westerwald. Along with other hiking trails, a pump track and cultural sites, the town offers a range of options for planning your trip.

Hiking with a variety of points of interest

The Hellerhöhenweg runs for 39 kilometres between Betzdorf on the Sieg and Haiger. Starting at the train station and then continuing through the pedestrian zone links a specific starting point with the route into the countryside. After climbing towards Hachenburger Höhe, the trail offers views over the Daadetal valley and the wider Westerwald.

For a regionally focused hiking experience, three stages of the Natursteig Sieg pass through the forests, heights and valleys around Betzdorf-Gebhardshain, with climbs and viewpoints along the way. The Druidensteig links Betzdorf with Steinerother Kopf and leads through natural landscapes as a quality hiking trail. This gives you a choice of routes with different geographical focuses.

Starting points and stops along the way also vary: the Betzdorf–Dickendorfer Mühle circular trail starts and ends at Betzdorf train station. Along the route, it passes the Hüttenschulzehaus, a half-timbered house with a history dating back to the 17th century. The pilgrimage route from Betzdorf towards Marienstatt offers rest and activity stops at Dickendorfer Mühle and the Grube Bindweide visitor mine.

Architecture and railway history

St. Ignatius in Betzdorf is designed as a neo-Gothic basilica with a transept and a tower topped by a pointed roof. The former Betzdorf railway repair shop also tells the story of the town’s railway heritage: protected historic buildings have been preserved there in an industrial heritage setting. The church and the former workshop offer different points of interest—one through its architectural style, the other through its connection to the railway.

The Betzdorf History Museum opened to the public in 2016 as a volunteer-run museum with changing exhibitions. Since the exhibitions change, it is best to check current visitor information before your visit.

Cycling and a break at the mill

Cycling, rather than hiking, is the focus at the Bruche pump track. Its rollers, bends and obstacles make it suitable for beginners as well as experienced riders; you can ride it without pedalling. The pump track is open to the public and offers a leisure activity for people of all ages. Check whether it is available for use before your visit.

Dickendorfer Mühle adds a café serving homemade cake to the route stops. If you plan to visit the café, check in advance whether it will be open during your visit.

Choose the right focus for your trip

This lets you choose between a clearly defined local focus and a broader regional hiking experience. Cultural history and the pump track offer additional themes for a trip that goes beyond hiking.
