Selbach (Sieg): Streams, nature and living tradition
Accommodation in Selbach (Sieg)
Selbach between the stream nature trail and village tradition
Selbach (Sieg) has two clearly distinct sides: the stream nature trail leads through woodland and wet meadows, while a centuries-old Klappern tradition shapes village life. This custom is organised by children and young people. Your answer can help determine your preferred search location and the character of your stay.
Hiking along the stream nature trail
The Selbach stream nature trail is an approximately 4.5-kilometre circular route, rated as easy, along the Selbach stream. The path runs through woodland and wet meadows to the Stöckewiese spring. Numerous information boards cover local nature; if you are particularly interested in their content, check on site what is currently on display. The stated distance is an approximation and may be revised, so it is worth checking the current route description before setting out.
You can start the route at the central village car park via a yellow-marked access path, or directly from Wiesenstraße. If you plan to use the car park, check the current parking regulations before your visit. The kingfisher is the emblematic animal of the stream nature trail and may be spotted along the route. Sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed.
A village custom with its own sound
As part of the Klappern tradition, children and young people set out from the church and walk through every street in the village, carrying wooden clappers. They organise this centuries-old custom themselves. The route through the village, its distinctive sound and the role of the younger generation give the tradition its own character. Alongside the nature trail, it offers a cultural perspective on Selbach, although the two experiences need not appeal to the same travel interests.
Hiking on different scales
The Sieg Nature Region brings together wooded ridges and valleys with half-timbered villages, churches, monasteries, castles and museums. Hiking routes also vary in length: the stream nature trail is a circular route of approximately 4.5 kilometres, while the Natursteig Sieg covers around 200 kilometres. It passes through river landscapes and by scenic viewpoints. This puts a clearly defined circular walk and a much longer hiking route side by side as options on different scales.

The wider Altenkirchen travel destination has a historical connection to Flammersfeld: in 1849, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen founded the “Flammersfelder Hülfsverein zur Unterstützung unbemittelter Landwirthe” there, the world’s first loan fund association. Marienthal, meanwhile, is now a popular pilgrimage site. The Klosterdorfweg trail runs around the former Franciscan monastery and through the Archdiocese of Cologne’s shady spa forest.
