Wissen brings together river landscapes, hiking trails and remarkable reminders of local history. Trails along the Sieg invite you to spend time outdoors, while church art, chapels and traces of the area’s former mining industry offer cultural points of interest. You can shape your stay around different priorities—from a challenging, long circuit to guided walks through the town.

Riverside Trails and Hiking Tours Around Wissen

The Sieg promenade offers a barrier-free riverside walking path all year round and opportunities to watch grey herons. During high water, trail and access conditions may change temporarily. For longer hikes, RegioBahnhof, an award-winning hiking station, connects several hiking options with public transport.

The challenging circular route “Natursteig Sieg | Stage 10 | Around Wissen” starts and ends at Wissen station and is around 25 kilometres long. Along the way, field, forest and meadow trails pass through idyllic stream valleys, while expansive views add to the scenery. Route details may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

The Auenland Trail offers another perspective on the landscape: it passes through forests and meadows, follows the Firzelsbach stream and runs along paths above the Sieg. The different route descriptions can help you plan—whether you are looking for a long route rated as challenging or would prefer a trail through stream and meadow landscapes.

Chapels, a Castle and Local History

The guided Chapel Trail is approximately four kilometres long and takes around two and a half hours. It starts at the tourist information office in RegioBahnhof and leads to Schönstein Castle, its castle chapel and Heister Chapel. Both chapels are accessible only as part of the guided tour. Schönstein Castle is inhabited and cannot be visited inside. Check the latest booking information before taking part.

Heister Chapel was built in 1714 and is considered one of the oldest half-timbered chapels in Rhineland-Palatinate. Schönstein Castle also brings history and landscape together: it was first mentioned in a document in 1255 and stands on a rock at the confluence of the Elbbach and the Sieg. At the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, the surviving painted decoration is considered Peter Hecker’s largest surviving work of art. The church’s oldest inventory item is a baptismal font from the 13th century.

A guided tour of the town centre lasts around two hours and also starts at the tourist information office in RegioBahnhof. Stops include kulturWERKwissen, a former mining industry site now used for art and culture, as well as the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, the Marktstube, Steinbuschanlage, directors’ villas, the Germania Hotel and Gerichtsstraße. The tour brings together the industrial past, religious history and places shaped by civic life. Compared with the approximately two-and-a-half-hour Chapel Trail, this tour is a little shorter; both options give you a clear time frame for planning your day.

Cycling Routes, Trees and Time in the Water

Cycling also reveals different sides of the region. The Nister-Flitzer cycling tour runs from Wissen along the Nister to the Weltendepfad, through the Kroppacher Schweiz and over a suspension bridge near Helmeroth. The “Stille Post” cycling tour follows a former mining railway line through an area shaped by the iron ore mining industry. Along a hiking trail in Wissen, the Köttingsbach tree trail introduces 22 trees over a distance of around 500 metres.

If you would rather spend time in the water than go on a tour, Siegtalbad has indoor and outdoor pools, a diving tower, a 60-metre slide, a heated outdoor pool and a large sunbathing lawn. There are also various types of sauna, relaxation areas, a whirlpool and a wellness area. Nature trails, cultural activities and swimming are all options for your stay.

Choose the Focus of Your Stay

The circular route and the two guided walks differ considerably in duration and character; the Auenland Trail adds forests, meadows and the Firzelsbach stream to the options. By planning your days around the experiences that interest you most, you can focus your search on Wissen as a travel destination.
