Hallgarten is surrounded by wooded areas and gently rolling hills. Sweeping panoramas and scenic viewpoints shape the landscape; the area is considered particularly suitable for hiking and cycling. When planning your trip, you can therefore give different priorities to outdoor activities and cultural history.

Montfort Castle Ruins: History and Views

Montfort Castle stands on a wooded hill 280 metres high between Hallgarten and Duchroth. The castle was built around 1240 and captured and destroyed in 1456. The castle ruins are free to visit; the approximately nine-metre-high remnant of the keep is accessible as a viewpoint. The small museum at the ruins displays archaeological finds from the ruins. The castle museum also presents architectural remains in a lapidarium and a reconstructed model of the castle. The site’s present-day life is also part of the visitor experience: Burgfreunde Montfort e. V. regularly holds festivals at the ruins.

Architectural History and Winegrowing in Hallgarten

Hallgarten was first mentioned in 1391 under the name “Hargarten.” The Catholic church is a chancel-tower church built in 1937/38 from red sandstone ashlar. The Protestant church dates from 1927 and is a Neo-Romanesque sandstone ashlar building. The former school with teachers’ accommodation, also a sandstone ashlar building, and bearing the date 1901, is another part of the area’s architectural history. The surviving architectural evidence thus spans from the medieval castle to buildings of the 20th century.

Dreiweiherhof in Hallgarten is also associated with several historical episodes: Romans stopped there, Napoleonic troops passed through, and Schinderhannes used one of his hiding places there. Winegrowing is another facet of the area. Weingut Grünewald is a family-run winery in Hallgarten dating back to 1864 and cultivating 5 hectares of vineyards. If you are planning a visit, check the winery’s current situation in advance.

In the wider destination of Bad Kreuznach

The wider destination of Bad Kreuznach also offers its own cultural attractions. The bridge houses in the town of Bad Kreuznach were built from 1480 onwards because of a lack of space. The half-timbered buildings stand on the pillars of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. This makes it possible to distinguish the dates of the houses from that of the older bridge. Since 1985/86, the museums of the town of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor, which is set in a historic park.

In Bretzenheim, the Felseneremitage is a place of worship carved entirely into the rock. It probably originated in prehistoric times and was repurposed in the early Christian period. It can be viewed from outside year-round without a guide; access to the rock dwelling is currently not possible because of a rockfall. In Windesheim, the orgel ART Museum is dedicated to musical instruments and is unique of its kind in Germany.

This gives you a concrete distinction to consider when choosing a destination: Hallgarten combines hilly countryside and trails with the history of its castle and village; Bad Kreuznach, Bretzenheim and Windesheim each offer the cultural attractions named for them. Use these differences to guide your search according to which of these themes you want to shape your stay.
