Ippesheim combines architectural styles from different periods, a traditional founding story, and leisure grounds with play and relaxation areas. This brings local history and leisure together as distinct interests. The buildings offer a chance to compare different materials and construction periods, while the leisure grounds provide a different focus.

Architectural styles spanning several centuries

The Protestant Christ Church at Frankfurter StraĂźe 2 is a two-storey hall church built of small ashlar masonry. It was constructed in 1892 to a design by C. Schwartze of Darmstadt. The corner house at Ernst-Ludwig-StraĂźe 1 is a brick building dating from 1891. At number 4 on the same street stands an 18th-century house with some half-timbering.

There is also a corner house at FalkensteinstraĂźe 1 with partly plastered half-timbering; it probably dates from the late 18th century. Frankfurter StraĂźe 8 adds a one-and-a-half-storey yellow-brick building dating from shortly after 1900. Together, the buildings mentioned here span the period from the 18th century to the early 20th century. Alongside brick and yellow brick, half-timbering and small ashlar masonry stand out as distinct architectural features. These specific differences make Ippesheim appealing to travelers who take an interest in architecture and architectural history as well as visiting the town.

Tradition, town layout, and change

According to tradition, a Frank is said to have founded a settlement in Ippesheim for the first time in the 9th or 10th century. Another historical point of reference is the town layout, which has changed little since around 1800. The founding story and the account of the town’s layout thus provide different time periods from which to consider Ippesheim’s development.

A more recent change is also part of the townscape: The completion of the new B 41 bypass brought a noticeable reduction in traffic in Ippesheim. Thus, alongside the largely unchanged town layout and older buildings, changes in local traffic are another aspect of the town’s history.

Leisure grounds and play area

The leisure grounds were created on the site of a former sports field. They include earth mounds planted with wildflowers, benches, play equipment, and a ball court. The features cater to different interests: the benches offer somewhere to sit, while the play equipment and ball court provide opportunities for physical activity. The planted earth mounds add their own distinctive design feature to the grounds.

There is also a play area at the sports field in Ippesheim. The play area and leisure grounds offer a different focus from the historic houses: here, play, activity, and taking a break come to the fore, while the houses highlight building styles and local history. For travelers with different interests, this contrast can help when deciding which aspects of the town to focus on.

Putting Ippesheim in context as a travel destination
