Discover Neu-Bamberg
Accommodation in Neu-Bamberg
Neu-Bamberg combines striking castle ruins and historic sites with two Hiwweltour trails that differ in route length, starting point and scenery. You can shape your stay around local history and your hiking interests: one trail starts and ends at Hesselborner MĂĽhle in the village, while the other starts at the old railway station between Frei-Laubersheim and Neu-Bamberg.
Castle ruins and traces of history
The restored Neu-Baumburg castle ruins crown Neu-Bamberg. Construction of the fortress began in the first third of the 13th century; parts of the old fortress were restored and rebuilt in 1980. The castle provides a visible focal point for the village’s history, while a historic circular trail takes in other important buildings and sites connected with the town’s past. An audio version accompanies the walk.
The circular trail and audio version offer a way to explore the village in their own right, whether or not you are also planning a longer hike. Another historical reference point is winegrowing: the name “am Eichelberg” is documented as early as 1521 for a Neu-Bamberg vineyard. Local stories thus bring together architectural history and the long-established name of a vineyard.
Comparing the two Hiwweltour trails
Heideblick: vineyards, heathland and the Appelbach Valley
The Hiwweltour Heideblick is a 10-kilometre circular hike starting and ending at Hesselborner MĂĽhle in Neu-Bamberg. Its scenery includes cultivated vineyards, protected natural areas, heathland and panoramic views around Neu-Bamberg. At the Adlerdenkmal, a viewpoint looks out over the Neu-Bamberger Heide nature reserve.
Another section follows an old railway line through the Appelbach Valley to the Katzensteigermühle area. The Hiwweltour Heideblick can be accessed at Burggraben, Uhrturm and Hesselborner Mühle. The combination of a viewpoint, heathland and a former railway line makes the route’s features easy to distinguish: you can identify the trail by its scenery as well as by individual landmarks.
Eichelberg: old railway line and steeper sections
The Hiwweltour Eichelberg is an 11.08-kilometre circular hike. It starts and ends at the old railway station between Frei-Laubersheim and Neu-Bamberg. The trail follows the old railway line past an active quartz porphyry quarry. As operations may change, check the latest route information before setting out.
Along the way, there are views towards Neu-Bamberger Heide, Ajaxturm and the castle ruins in Neu-Bamberg. The trail is rated moderate, with steeper sections on the ascent and descent of Eichelberg. By comparison, Heideblick is shorter at 10 kilometres. Eichelberg is longer and combines the railway line with the viewpoints mentioned above and steeper stretches. You can choose between them based on route length, starting point and the landscape features described for each trail.
Getting there and planning your stay
For the Hiwweltour Heideblick, take bus 224 from Bad Kreuznach railway station to the Neu-Bamberg stop. Check the latest timetable before setting off. Guided hikes are also offered on both Hiwweltour trails; check dates and booking arrangements in advance. Routes and access points may change, so it is worth checking the latest route information before you start.
If you are looking for accommodation in Neu-Bamberg, first consider what you would like your stay to focus on: local history, the Heideblick trail or the Eichelberg circular hike. The two hikes have different starting points, so include the relevant trailhead and your journey there in your plans.
