Meddersheim combines vineyards and farmland with wooded hills rising to 430 metres. This varied cultural landscape gives the village its distinctive character, while circular trails wind through vineyards and forests. You can tailor your stay to suit a stroll, a longer hike or a bike ride, and discover the landscape in different ways.

Circular Trails, Views and Bike Rides

Several circular hiking trails start and finish in Meddersheim. Two circular trails run within the village, and a short, accessible circular walk offers one way to explore Meddersheim. If you are looking for a longer route, local hiking options include trails through vineyards and forests. The H1 Menschels Route is 8.0 kilometres long and passes the Schönste Weinsicht 2016 viewpoint. From the described stele, the view extends across the volcanic Nahe Valley towards the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and Donnersberg.

For cycling, a suggested circular route along the Nahe Cycle Route is a different proposition: it goes from Meddersheim to Bad Kreuznach and back, covering approximately 45 kilometres. Bad Sobernheim station can also be reached from Meddersheim via the Nahe Cycle Route; the distance is about three kilometres. This means you can choose between short local walks, an 8.0-kilometre hiking route and a much longer cycling loop. Route information may be updated, so check the route details before setting off.

Winegrowing and the Village Character

Meddersheim’s vineyards belong to the Paradiesgarten winegrowing area. Named vineyard sites include Altenberg, Edelberg and Rheingrafenberg. Riesling accounts for approximately 60 percent of the vineyard area. Winegrowing is important to the village: three wineries market their own produce, and the Nahe’s only remaining winegrowers’ cooperative represents Nahe wine in the village.

These details give winegrowing in Meddersheim a specific character: alongside the grape variety and winegrowing area, the names of individual vineyard sites and the different ways the wine is marketed also shape the village’s identity. The circular trails start and finish in the village, while the suggested ride to Bad Kreuznach and back is another option for a longer bike tour.

Landscape and Plant Life

The municipal area lies in the Saar-Nahe hills and uplands, a landscape shaped by a patchwork of woodland and open country. Vineyards and farmland meet wooded hills here. The plant life also offers plenty to discover: spring flowers include fumitory, field star-of-Bethlehem and primroses, and orchids are also found here. One estimate puts the number of fern and flowering plant species at around 500, including rare and endangered species.

If you want to take in your surroundings as well as the route while hiking, you will find a variety of landscapes here: open areas, wooded hills and vineyards. The hills rise to 430 metres. Together with the trails through forests and vineyards, they provide varied settings for walks and hikes, and not all routes need to have the same character.

Roman Remains and a Look at Bad Kreuznach

The history of Meddersheim includes Roman remains in the surrounding municipal area. These include remnants of a Roman aqueduct, the remains of a Roman villa wall and sections of a partially preserved Roman road that ran close to the village. These traces add to the picture of a destination whose appeal is not limited to its landscape and winegrowing.

One distinctive architectural feature of the wider Bad Kreuznach destination is the bridge houses in Bad Kreuznach. Built from 1480 onwards to address a lack of space, these half-timbered buildings stand on the piers of the old Nahe Bridge, which dates from around 1300. This glimpse of historic architecture and urban history offers a different focus from Meddersheim’s vineyards and circular trails.
