Stromberg: Castles, Finds and Circular Routes
Accommodation in Stromberg
Stromberg combines a distinctive castle heritage with traces spanning from antiquity to more recent history. The town is known as the town of three castles between the Hunsrück, Rhine and Nahe, and as the town of the German Michel. The restored Schlangenturm, a historic defensive tower, is part of the former town fortifications. When choosing accommodation in Stromberg, you can plan your stay around whether circular routes, history or both will be its focus.
Castles tell stories of different eras
Alte Stromburg is a medieval castle complex dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. In the 1980s, it was excavated by the archaeological heritage authorities in Mainz. Nearby, Gollenfels Castle was probably built in the 12th century on the foundations of an old Roman fortification that guarded a road from Mainz to Trier. The castle theme thus brings a medieval complex and an earlier fortification into focus, with the latter’s history connected to a Roman road route.
Local history at the museum
The Stromberg Local History Museum presents local history in rooms arranged by theme. Its collections include fragments from Roman excavations, medieval relics, maps and charters, as well as documents from the 16th to the 20th century. Archaeological finds are also on display, including an almost completely preserved mosaic. This variety offers different ways to explore the past: through objects and through written records such as maps, charters and documents.
The Stromberg Knights’ Tour: two distances
The Stromberg Knights’ Tour connects three castles on a castle-themed circular hike. The trail design features a story, QR-code content and treasure-hunter characters aimed at children. You can choose between the 5.8 km main loop and the 3.2 km family loop; the latter is 2.6 km shorter. You can start at the Stromburg hiking car park or in the town centre. The route length and starting point give you practical points of comparison for planning. The treasure-hunter characters and storytelling add a distinctive touch for families travelling with children.
Pilgrimage route and a place to eat
The Hildegard of Bingen Pilgrimage Route also uses Stromberg as the endpoint of one stage and the starting point of the next. This provides clear guidance if you are planning your pilgrimage in stages. Check the route before setting out.
Bistro Mistral is located in the Panoramabad Stromberg complex and serves German and Croatian specialities. Facilities include a terrace and indoor seating; there is also a view of the valley. The bistro has a separate entrance and is open to guests who are not using the swimming pool. Before visiting, check access, the food menu and seating options.
