Erden: Vineyards, Roman wine press and village history
Accommodation in Erden
Erden is shaped by the vineyards of Erdener Treppchen and Erdener Prälat, a Roman wine-press complex and a village centre with half-timbered houses. From here, hiking trails lead through the vineyards to the heights above the Moselle; two stages of the Moselsteig are nearby. This lets you get to know the village from different perspectives, with a focus on wine-growing history, village life and outdoor activities.
Roman Wine Press and Wine-Growing History
The Roman wine press was discovered and excavated during land consolidation work in Erdener Treppchen. It can be visited year-round; guided tours are available by arrangement. A restored tree press also stands in Hermann-Schwaab-Platz. Its pressing technique was already used in Roman times. The Roman wine-press complex in Erden is also one of the attractions on the “Weinschichten” loop of the Moselhöhenradweg.
Village Church, Chapel and Village Centre
The village centre is characterised by 17th- and 18th-century half-timbered houses, winding lanes and picturesque courtyards. The village church was completed in 1720. Inside, the high altar features a stone retable dating from 1654, considered an early Baroque work of art. The chapel’s murals depict scenes from the martyrdoms of Thyrsus and Boniface. The chapel is also a place to pause for pilgrims and hikers travelling along the Moselle or around Erden.
Vineyards and Trails Above the Moselle Valley
Across from Erden, the vines of Erdener Treppchen grow on steep slate slopes. The Erdener Kletterweg (Erden climbing trail) runs through Treppchen and Prälat; climbing sections and views over the Moselle Valley define the route. The trail borders breeding areas for eagle owls and kestrels. The area is also considered the northernmost range of the rock bunting. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Away from the climbing trail, hiking routes from Erden also lead through the vineyards and up to the Moselle heights. A signposted connecting trail runs from the Erden–Lösnich bridge through Erdener Treppchen and links Erden with the Moselsteig. The bridge also provides access to the opposite side of the Moselle. The options offer different experiences: the climbing trail combines vineyard scenery with climbing sections, while other hikes lead from the vineyards up to the heights.
Spring Water and Moselle Wines
The Treppchenblickbrunnen fountain is fed by spring water that flows into a nearby biotope. Right on the banks of the Moselle, the Campingschänke at Erden campsite serves regional dishes and Moselle wine. If you plan to visit, check in advance what is currently on offer.
If you would also like to explore the other side of the Moselle, the bridge between Erden and Lösnich provides access. Deciding which side you want to make part of your stay can help guide your choice of destination and your plans for the day.
