Bernkastel-Kues can be explored on several levels: in its historic town centre, from the viewpoint at Landshut Castle and in the vineyards above the Old Town. There are also hiking and cycling routes, as well as guided experiences. To plan your trip, it helps to decide first which of these aspects matter most to you.

Old Town and Landshut Castle

In Bernkastel’s historic centre, narrow streets, half-timbered houses and the historic market square shape the townscape. The Spitzhäuschen is a popular photo spot and makes a striking feature among the houses. Strolling through the town centre lets you experience a different side of the place than the view across the Moselle loop.

Landshut Castle rises above Bernkastel’s Old Town. It stands on the foundations of a Roman fortification from the 4th century and offers panoramic views of the Moselle loop, the rooftops of the Old Town and the surrounding vineyards. History and landscape come together in a single vista: the old rooftops lie below the castle, while the vineyards blend into the surrounding scenery.

Vineyards and Riesling

The Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard lies directly above the historic Old Town. Its steep slope of Devonian slate, along with the local light and reflection conditions, supports Riesling cultivation; the vines are tended by hand. The character of Bernkastel-Kues is defined not only by its houses and lanes, but also by its hillside location, geology and winegrowing.

If you are particularly interested in wine, you can experience the vineyard as part of the landscape and the guided Doctor wine tour as a separate activity. The two offer different perspectives: one focuses on the hillside location and how it is cultivated, the other on a guided experience centred on the Doctor vineyard. Tour formats may change seasonally or for organisational reasons, so check what is currently available in advance.

On foot, by bike or on a guided tour

Bernkastel-Kues provides access to hikes through the steep Moselle vineyards, the Moselsteig long-distance trail, its side trails and local routes in the holiday region. This offers a range of ways to get around, from vineyard paths to long-distance trails. Routes and signage may change, so check the latest hiking information before setting off.

The Moselle Cycle Route offers a different perspective: it passes directly through the Bernkastel-Kues area and is described as flat and signposted. Its scenery includes vineyards, the river and Moselle towns. If you are deciding between hiking and cycling, you can take both the different options and the landscape described for each into account when planning. Cycling conditions and signage may also change.

Guided experiences include a classic Old Town tour, an evening night-watchman tour and the Doctor wine tour. The selection ranges from local history to a nighttime walk and wine. If a particular format is important to you, check what is currently available in advance.

Practical information and the wider region

Parking is available in Bernkastel and Kues, including a car park in the Old Town and facilities on both banks of the Moselle. Rules, fees and availability may change; current information from the local authority can help with planning. This lets you factor in travelling by car without making your accommodation choice depend on it alone.

The wider travel destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich also offers a broader perspective on the landscape: the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the Hunsrück, rich in forests and meadows, meet here. At 816 metres, the Erbeskopf is a great place for hiking and offers a wide range of winter sports. The National Park Gate at the Erbeskopf provides information about nature and the environment; its interactive multimedia exhibition focuses on forests and moors.
