Landscheid: Hiking Trails, Archaeology and Local History
Accommodation in Landscheid
Landscheid lies between Trier, Wittlich and Bitburg. Hiking trails, archaeological traces and memories of the lives of local traders give this destination a variety of character. When choosing your accommodation, it is worth first considering whether you mainly want to hike, explore cultural history or combine the two.
Hiking trails between the Lieser and Salm rivers
The “Mills on the Lieser and Salm” circular hiking trail connects the Lieser and Salm valleys via Himmerod. Its sections follow the riverbanks and pass through woodland, as well as along natural-surface paths, across meadows and through fields. Viewpoints add to the route. A route from Himmerod follows the Salm through green countryside and passes historic mills.
Stage 13 of the Eifelsteig briefly runs along the edge of Landscheid. This makes it a different hiking option from the circular trail: one is a short stretch of the Eifelsteig on the outskirts, while the other is a circular route between the valleys. You can weigh up which of these two hiking ideas you would like to shape your stay.
Archaeological traces and local history
The Burscheid Wall is a Celtic ring fort in the area of Landscheid. It includes parts of a Celtic refuge and remains of a Roman-era settlement. The Roman tomb also points to the past: the sandstone structure is considered an archaeological feature resembling a tomb, and is believed to date from around 200 AD.
In the centre of Landscheid, the guild tree displays symbols of local traders and businesspeople. The Peter-Zirbes House in Niederkail offers a more detailed insight into the lives of traders in the past. It is housed in the former home of the Eifel poet Peter Zirbes. Its original furnishings document the living conditions of traders from Niederkail and Landscheid; paintings, drawings, manuscripts, photographs and books from Zirbes’ estate add to this insight. Visits to the Peter-Zirbes House are arranged by appointment.
In Burg, the Chapel of the Holy Cross replaced an older chapel in 1908; it was consecrated in 1909. Another glimpse into the former world of local traders is offered by a historic merchant’s wagon from 1900, which visitors can climb inside. Before visiting, check whether access is currently possible.
More things to do in Landscheid and Bernkastel-Wittlich
At Ponyhofabenteuer in Landscheid-Burg, pony groups and bookable activities are available. These include watching, grooming and leading ponies, as well as painting ceramics. This offers a different kind of activity from the hiking trails and historical attractions.
In the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination, the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the HunsrĂĽck, rich in forests and meadows, meet. The 816-metre-high Erbeskopf invites you to go hiking and offers a wide range of winter sports. At the Erbeskopf National Park Gate, an interactive multimedia exhibition provides information about nature and the environment, with a focus on forests and moors. The pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen offers a different cultural and historical perspective: it was consecrated in 1502, and Klausen remains an annual destination for pilgrims.
