Dodenburg lies on a plateau in the southern part of the Heckenland region. Its location in the Meulenwald forest offers views of the surrounding area. Here, landscapes, traces of history and recurring local traditions come together.

Hiking Trails and Views

Dodenburg has numerous hiking trails, including some long-distance routes. If hiking is important to your trip, it is worth checking the specific routes and the latest route information before setting out. The views of the surrounding area lend the location in the Meulenwald forest its own distinctive character.

Bell Tower and Castle History

Dodenburg was first documented in the 13th century. Historically, the village was a fief of Neuerburg Castle, which lay east of Wittlich; the castle changed hands several times over the course of its history. Its wall and outbuildings are listed buildings. The castle is privately owned, so check possible access conditions before planning a visit.

The village’s history also includes a bell tower with a bell cast in 1557. The present-day tower was donated to the municipality in 1952. The documented historical dates therefore span the village’s first mention, the bell and the donation of the present-day tower.

Local Amenities and Traditions

A large children’s playground is located in the village centre; check before visiting whether it is currently open for use. The privately owned fishing pond can be used for a fee. Access and fees may change, so it is advisable to enquire in advance. A barbecue hut is also available to rent; ask about its availability when planning your visit.

Recurring local events include Kirmes coffee gatherings, a women’s breakfast during Carnival, Hexennacht (Witches’ Night) with the traditional Maypole raising, a St Nicholas celebration, a St Martin’s procession and a senior citizens’ afternoon. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the current dates, as event schedules may change.

For a broader regional perspective: in Bernkastel-Wittlich, the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the HunsrĂĽck, rich in forests and meadows, meet. If you are looking for a hike with a stated distance, Manderscheid has the Manderscheider Burgenstieg: a moderately challenging 5.4-kilometre circular route around the castles, with a stated duration of two hours. The 816-metre-high Erbeskopf is a popular hiking destination and offers a variety of winter sports. Cultural destinations offer a different focus: the pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen was consecrated in 1502, and Klausen remains an annual destination for pilgrims.
