Frauenberg offers two different focal points for your trip: the ruins of Frauenburg with their surviving structures, and the Countess Loretta Dream Loop as a longer circular hike. When choosing accommodation, first consider whether you would rather focus your stay on the castle ruins or on an active day of hiking.

Traces of Frauenburg

The striking shield wall, the keep, a smaller tower, and the remains of a chapel have survived. The fortifications and chapel remains offer different historical points of interest at the site. The ruins are about 800 metres’ walk from the car park. This approximate distance can help you factor the walk into your plans.

The Countess Loretta Dream Loop

The Countess Loretta Dream Loop is a circular trail around 12.5 kilometres long and takes about 3.5 hours. It is rated moderate and includes steeper sections. Highlights include Frauenburg, Nahekopf, the Nahe River and Klausfelsen, as well as viewpoints and picnic areas. This makes a hike lasting several hours a separate option for planning your day, in addition to the walk to the ruins. Trail conditions may vary after heavy rain. Take the walking time and steeper sections into account if you include the loop in your day’s plans.

Starting point and getting there

The Countess Loretta Loop begins at the riverside hiking car park on Bahnhofstraße, near the Frauenburg ruins. Bus route 820 serves nearby stops, including Frauenberg/Mitte and Frauenberg/Gasthaus Thalbach. Parking is available at the Frauenburg car park by the Nahe River. If you are travelling by bus, check the timetable in advance. This lets you factor the starting point and journey into your day’s plans without treating the hike and the walk to the ruins as the same thing.

More to explore in the wider Birkenfeld destination

The wider Birkenfeld destination offers further nature and culture attractions. Part of the HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park lies within the Birkenfeld collective municipality. The Birkenfeld State Museum has permanent exhibitions on the Celts and Romans; Birkenfeld and the Wittelsbachs; the iron industry in Birkenfeld district; an old classroom from around 1930; and the Oldenburg period. The regional cultural offering thus spans both early history and more recent local and everyday history.

The wider Birkenfeld destination also offers different outdoor experiences. The 2.5-kilometre Götterallee between the local municipalities of Schwollen and Leisel features ten life-size, colourful figures of gods. The Obere Nahe Water Experience Trail in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach is one kilometre long and has four access points. Its themes include aquatic creatures of the Upper Nahe, such as barbel and gudgeon; waterbirds such as kingfishers and dippers; and dragonfly species such as the common damselfly and the river clubtail. The wider Birkenfeld destination therefore offers a choice of different interests, from hiking to art in the landscape and learning about nature.
