Discover Horbruch: Mill Trails and Roman History
Accommodation in Horbruch
Horbruch is considered a small, wooded settlement in the Hunsrück, on the edge of the watershed between the Moselle and Nahe rivers. The Via Molarum runs through the village, connecting changing landscapes with the theme of mills. The Roman Antoniusstraße runs along the edge of the village; an ancient place of worship lies about three kilometres away. Hiking and cultural history therefore offer different focuses to choose from for a trip.
The Via Molarum: Landscapes and Mill Trails
The 15.5-kilometre Via Molarum is a premium hiking trail that passes through Horbruch, Hirschfeld, Wahlenau and Krummenau. Horbruch is one starting point for the route. It was certified in 2024; its hiking seal is valid until April 2027.
The route alternates between fields, forest sections, sweeping views and meadow valleys. Along the trail, you will encounter former mills or traces of mills. Information boards explain the theme of mills, bringing together landscape impressions and mill history.
One possible starting point is the car park at the community centre on Hochscheider Straße. Horbruch is considered a place without a direct public transport connection. Plan your journey to the starting point in advance and check the relevant information again before your visit.
Hiking Trails and History
A second route, the Roman-era Antoniusstraße, runs along the edge of Horbruch and forms part of a long-distance hiking trail from the Rhine to the Moselle. Pilgrims can have their pilgrim passports stamped at the Historic Schlossmühle in Horbruch. If you are counting on getting the stamp, confirm its availability beforehand.
A place of worship, whose history dates back to Celtic times, lies about three kilometres from Horbruch. In the 2nd century AD, the Romans expanded a Celtic temple into a place of worship. Finds include altars and almost life-size statues of Sirona and Apollo; further finds are on display at the Landesmuseum Trier. The site's history thus spans its Celtic beginnings, its Roman expansion and the finds now exhibited in the museum.
Dining and Finding Accommodation
There are two places to eat in Horbruch along the Via Molarum: Scherers Landgasthof and the Hotel-Restaurant Historische Schlossmühle. The latter is also relevant to pilgrims who wish to have their passports stamped.
For family trips, prioritising your interests can make planning easier: should the focus be on the varied landscapes of the Via Molarum, the mill trails and information boards, or Roman and Celtic history? These themes can also help guide your search for accommodation in Horbruch.
Culture in the Wider Birkenfeld Destination
