Discover Sehl: Half-timbered houses, Moselle views and vineyards
Accommodation in Sehl
Sehl brings together architectural history and themes of the Moselle landscape: half-timbered houses, Ebernach Monastery, winegrowing and views of Reichsburg Castle. Many residential areas offer views of the Moselle Valley and the castle. When planning your trip, it is worth choosing a focus: Would you like to explore historic architecture, combine winegrowing with the landscape, plan a tour through the vineyards, or coordinate your stay with the traditional festival in September? These different points of interest can be combined according to your interests.
Half-timbered houses and different building periods
One half-timbered house in Sehl is among the oldest in the region. Dendrochronological studies date its timber framework to 1374/75. The provost’s building at Ebernach Monastery was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1750 and is a listed monument. The “Sehler Dom” is dedicated to Saint Anthony; in 1915, a west portal was added. Dendrochronology determines age by analyzing tree rings.
Ebernach Monastery was first mentioned in a document in 1130. The monastery church was rebuilt in 1956–57 with a bell tower, while the choir of the old chapel was preserved. The choir, or altar area, connects the new church building with part of the older chapel. The dates refer to different events: 1374/75 refers to the half-timbered house, 1750 to the rebuilding of the provost’s building, and 1956–57 to the construction of the new church.
Winegrowing in the Moselle landscape
Wine has been grown at the Ebernach Monastery winery since 1673. The winery is set amid the Moselle landscape, with its characteristic terraced vineyards. The terraces bring the connection between winegrowing and landscape to life: alongside the monastery’s history, the cultural landscape is another theme that can shape your stay.
Wine tasting is available at the winery. If you would like to include this in your plans, check the current visitor arrangements in advance. This lets you combine your interest in winegrowing with your travel plans without assuming that a tasting will be a fixed part of the program.
