Kalkofen lies between the Alsenz and Appel valleys, about two kilometers northeast of Alsenz. The village is said to be surrounded by vineyards and woodland. Its main street forms the central axis of the village; old half-timbered and sandstone houses, the history of lime burning, and local events offer a variety of ways to explore the area during your stay.

A Village Shaped by Its Lime Kiln History

Kalkofen is characterized as a typical linear village, with its main street forming the central local axis. Old half-timbered and sandstone houses can be found in the village. An old vineyard hut adds to the village’s character; it is privately maintained and fully renovated. The village fountain also reflects local history: it was designed in the shape of a lime kiln. The name Kalkofen refers to the former importance of lime burning, and a lime kiln is also depicted in the municipal coat of arms. A stone figure named Kalki has also been installed in the village.

Traces from Different Centuries

Kalkofen was probably founded in the 9th century; its first documented mention dates from 1365. A later phase of construction can be seen in the Protestant village church: the present building was constructed between 1800 and 1803 and has round-arched windows framed in sandstone. At the same time, the church is linked to an earlier Chapel of St. George, mentioned in records from 1460. The founding period, first written mention, earlier chapel, and construction of the present church are thus distinct historical points of reference for the village.

Leisure and Community Events

The Vockwiese recreation area includes a children’s playground, an event area, and a barbecue area. The playground is a practical option when planning a day out with children; the other areas offer their own opportunities for group activities. Check the current condition of the facilities before visiting. The local FC Kalkofen club also offers recreational sports, yoga, and hikes. Check the club’s current program in advance.

Wine, Oven, and Village Festivals

A baker on the main street fires up the communal oven. Food-focused events include “Wine and Bread” and the “Pizza Days”; vineyard-hut hikes are also among the local events. The Kalkower Kerb village festival features dancing, a procession, a festival speech, a raffle, horseback riding, and fireworks. Dates and individual program items may change, so check the latest event details before your trip.

Kalkofen also has a winery with guest rooms. This combines the village’s connection to wine with a specific overnight accommodation option. If you plan to stay there, check current availability before you arrive.

Hiking in the wider Donnersbergkreis destination

In the wider Donnersbergkreis destination, two circular hiking trails are easy to distinguish by their length and destination. The Ludwigsturm Circular Hiking Trail is 6.7 kilometers long, starts at Haus Linn in Dannenfels, and leads to Ludwigsturm. The tower itself is currently closed due to renovation work. The Wildenstein Castle Ruins Circular Hiking Trail is 7.9 kilometers long and leads to the Wildenstein castle ruins; at 1.2 kilometers longer, it is the longer route. These routes offer a separate hiking option in Donnersbergkreis.

The Donnersberg is also part of the wider Donnersbergkreis destination. At 687 meters, it is the highest elevation in the Palatinate. It covers about 2,400 hectares, is almost entirely forested, and stretches diagonally for up to 7.5 kilometers. Alongside Kalkofen’s village character, visitors can therefore also explore landscapes and hiking options that are specifically located in Donnersbergkreis.
