Zellertal brings together a working vineyard landscape, local history, recurring festivals and a themed trail through the valley. Events and historic sites add their own character in Zell, Harxheim and Niefernheim. This lets you tailor your stay more closely to outdoor activities, wine, culture or a specific event date.

Wine Country and the Zellertal Trail

The vineyard landscape of Zellertal covers around 100 hectares under cultivation. From Zell, which sits at a higher elevation, you can enjoy views across the landscape. The Zellertal Trail opened in 2016 as the valley’s main hiking trail. It runs directly through Zellertal and is suitable for hikers and cyclists. Its ten audio stations explain the stages of winegrowing throughout the year and trace the process from vine to wine. At the information signs, you can scan QR codes with your smartphone to access the audio files; each recording lasts two to three minutes.

In the wider Zellertal area, both Palatinate wine and Rheinhessen wine are produced; this makes the valley the only one in Germany to bring together two wine-growing regions. In the broader Donnersbergkreis travel destination, the approximately 25-kilometre Zellertal Cycle Route also follows the Pfrimm River, from the Rhine riverfront in Worms to Marnheim in Donnersbergkreis. The cycle route and the Zellertal Trail offer different ways to explore: the Zellertal Trail is defined by its ten stations and their themes, while the longer route along the Pfrimm is the focus of the Zellertal Cycle Route.

Festivals and Living Traditions

Several events are spread throughout the year. The traditional Zeller Markt takes place in Zell on the second weekend in September. The Haschemer Kerb is celebrated in Harxheim every year on the fourth weekend in September. The artists’ market takes place in winery courtyards and on the streets on the last weekend in June, rotating annually between Harxheim, Niefernheim and Zell. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates for your intended year of travel.

Another established tradition is the Philipps pilgrimage in Zell, held since 1780 on the Sunday after 3 May. The Philippsfest is celebrated on the same day. The pilgrimage also includes a motorcycle pilgrimage, organised jointly with the Ottersheim motorcycle club Brothers in Arms. More than 400 motorcycles take part at times; the number can vary from year to year. The event thus combines a long religious tradition with a striking motorcycle gathering.

Church, Town Hall and Natural Landmark

Zell is home to the small Baroque Church of St. Philip the Hermit, dating from 1749. The historic town hall in Harxheim dates from the mid-18th century. Both buildings give the villages a sense of history and can easily be combined with a visit timed to coincide with one of the recurring events.

The Wodanfelsen, a natural landmark and limestone formation, lies west of Zell. For a wine-focused activity, Weingut Schwan in Zellertal-Niefernheim offers wine tastings and winery tours. Together, these options offer different ways to explore: learn about winegrowing on the Zellertal Trail, enjoy a wine tasting at the winery, or discover the area’s historic and natural features.
