Obermoschel combines a distinctive old town with a history of winegrowing and mining. Around the Seelberg, the wine trail leads into the vineyards above Niedermoschel; meanwhile, the town hall, Petersturm tower and Renaissance buildings tell the story of the town's development. When planning your trip, you can choose between different areas of focus: local history, routes through the wine landscape, and hiking and cycling trails.

Old Town and Mining History

A walk through the old town takes you past carefully restored historic buildings that bear witness to the town's development. The town hall was built around 1510. Petersturm is the only surviving tower of the town wall and dates from the 14th or 15th century. Schuck’s House is a classic Renaissance landmark. The Polish Court is also worth seeing; its foundation stone was laid by the administrator of Landsberg Castle.

For centuries, cinnabar mining for mercury smelting shaped Obermoschel. Historic silver mining is also part of the town's history. The mercury mines are considered the discovery site of the minerals moschellandsbergite and moschelit. Another special feature can be found in the beer hall of the former Vetter brewery: it houses a model railway layout covering more than 150 square metres.

Wine Routes, Hiking and Cycling

Wine has been grown in Obermoschel since ancient times. The vines are mostly planted on steep slopes that are difficult to cultivate, with volcanic slate soils that contribute to the wines' distinctive character. Numerous information boards along the wine trail explain the age and origins of various grape varieties. The route passes the historic vineyard hut on the Seelberg, which stands above Obermoschel in a scenic location. From the town, the route leads into the vineyards above Niedermoschel and back again.

In addition to the wine trail, local recreational activities include the Geo-Cultural Trail, the Wind Trail, an extensive network of hiking paths and cycling routes. The Palatinate Heights Trail leads to Obermoschel as part of a multi-stage hike; the old town is named as a stage destination. Cyclists can reach the town on the “Alte Welt around Rockenhausen” route via the Moscheltal Cycle Path. The route passes, among other places, through Waldgrehweiler, Finkenbach-Gersweiler, Schiersfeld and Sitters.

Activities for Everyone and Getting Here

The multi-generation recreation area is located right on the Moscheltal Cycle Path. Facilities include a water play area, a volleyball court, a basketball hoop, a table tennis table, a barbecue area, a nest swing, a climbing frame and a growing willow maze. The area is intended for year-round use; the water play area is intended for use in spring and summer. When planning your day, you can also include some time outdoors alongside the local routes and sights.

Historic jousting tournaments are held every year at Landsberg Castle above Obermoschel. If you would like to plan your trip around them, check the event dates and programme in advance. The Obermoschel Mitte stop is served several times a day by bus route 914, which connects Alsenz, MĂĽnsterappel, Gaugrehweiler and Rockenhausen. Check the timetable before you travel.

The Wider Region: Donnersberg District

Those who also include the wider destination of Donnersberg District in their trip will find a distinct focus on landscape and archaeology. Donnersberg is 687 metres high and the highest elevation in the Palatinate. On the mountain, a Celtic wall dating from around 130 to 60/50 BC enclosed a Celtic oppidum. The Celtic Ring Wall consists of the buried remains of this wall, which was around 8.5 kilometres long. These themes complement Obermoschel's own history of winegrowing and mining.
