In Kerzenheim, a distinctive monastic history and a historic townscape meet trails in the Palatinate Forest. The ruins of St. Maria im Rosenthal Monastery, preserved half-timbered houses and an octagonal church give the town a range of cultural highlights. Kerzenheim lies on the edge of the Palatinate Forest. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on monastic history, the townscape or forest trails.

Monastic History in Rosenthal

The former Cistercian convent of St. Maria im Rosenthal is designated as a protected historic area in Kerzenheim-Rosenthalerhof. The former monastery church is now a ruin. Construction began in 1241, and it was consecrated in 1261. The interval between the start of construction and the consecration gives the site a specific historical timeframe.

The museum in the monastery’s “Nassauer Sälchen” features a model of the former monastery. Visitors can also see the chapter house, where the nuns once gathered. The model and the chapter house offer different perspectives: one focuses on the former monastery, the other on a space for communal life. At the monastery ruins, the “Digiwalk” audio guide tells the story of the monastery and is available as a free downloadable app. As app availability may change, it is best to check before your visit.

Townscape and Trails on the Edge of the Palatinate Forest

There are historic buildings to discover beyond the monastery complex, too. Kerzenheim’s preserved half-timbered houses are considered of tourist interest. An octagonal church in the town center is also considered of tourist interest. The half-timbered houses and octagonal church offer a different perspective on Kerzenheim than the history of the former monastery.

Kerzenheim lies right on the B 47 and on the edge of the Palatinate Forest. The “outer Rose Trail” runs around Rosenthal, a district of Kerzenheim, through the Palatinate Forest. Its route includes narrow, easy-to-walk paths as well as wider forest trails. This distinction is useful when imagining the route: it does not run exclusively along wide forest trails.

The information board at Rosenthaler Weiher is a starting point for several hiking trails. A parking lot in the middle of Rosenthal serves as a starting point for the Rose Trail and is close to the monastery ruins. As parking conditions may change, check them before setting out.

Smartphone Rallies for Children

At Rosenthal Monastery, you can choose between two smartphone rallies: a family version and a simpler version for children aged six and over. The age recommendation applies to the simpler rally. As app availability may change, it is a good idea to check shortly before your visit to see whether the rallies are accessible.

More Nature and Cultural Experiences in the Donnersberg District

The wider travel destination of the Donnersberg district offers a striking landscape feature in the Donnersberg: at 687 meters, it is the highest elevation in the Palatinate. The area covers about 2,400 hectares, is almost entirely forested and stretches diagonally for up to 7.5 kilometers. A wall about 8.5 kilometers long once surrounded a Celtic oppidum on the Donnersberg; its remains are now known as the Celtic Ring Wall. The fortification existed from about 130 to 60/50 BC.

There are several activities to choose from at the Eiswoog: boat trips, water treading, swimming and walks around the lake with a nature trail. The Eiswoog lies in the Palatinate Forest–Northern Vosges Biosphere Reserve and is considered a natural spectacle throughout the year. A paved, wheelchair-accessible path passes an observation platform with views over the lake.

Another option is the Stumpfwald Railway. It runs along a narrow-gauge track about four kilometers long, using converted former mining locomotives. Passengers can board at the Eiswoog, at Bockbachtal station near Kleehof, or at Ramsen West. If you are planning a train ride, it is worth checking the timetable.

Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Plans
